Long ago someone supposedly did a similar experiment with crickets: the insects would always hop in response to a certain sound, unless their legs were amputated … thus supposedly proving that crickets hear with their legs. I never believed that story for an instant — though apparently it is true that crickets’ ears are in their front legs.
