I was at a Christmas Eve dinner last night where a Russian woman expat was also a guest. She’s a friend of my daughter-in-law and has become a member of their family. The subject of Ukraine came up and she launched into a diatribe about Zelensky being a fascist (Putin was a conservative nationalist), her tax money was being spent on Ukraine, Ukraine didn’t really exist as a nation, and on and on and on.She has lived in the US for 23 years and I don’t think she has been back to Russia in all that time. You can take the Russian out of Russia but you can’t take Russia out of the Russian, or something like that.
The place around the corner charges over $5 for a fancy coffee. I can live without that. I should think we can all make a few sacrifices and endure a little higher pricing to help the Ukrainians.
“Said the king to the people everywhere / Listen to what I say! / (Listen to what I say!) / Pray for peace, people, everywhere.” From Do You Hear What I Hear: Lyrics by Noël Regney and music by Gloria Shayne – 1962.
The many generations of my grandmother’s (my Baba’s) family who are from Ukraine would certainly attest that Ukraine exists in all it’s loveliness and historic glory.
I keep seeing comments saying that Ukraine doesn’t exist as a country. Would one of these commenters please explain to me why Ukraine is listed as one of the original signatory nations to the United Nations Charter in 1945?
Shoot, meant to post this yesterday. Oh, well, better late than never: “On this day, a child was born, who, by age 30, would transform the world. Happy birthday Isaac Newton, born December 25, 1642.” —Neil deGrasse Tyson
God Bless the supporters of Putin! May they all have an opportunity to return to that land of opportunity and peace! May they all enjoy the benefits of their benevolent leader — they certainly cannot receive all those benefits in a place like America, can they? May Tucker Carlson and all the staff at Fox News go with them so they can enjoy all the benefits not available here. We hear continually how Russia is WINNING! We hear continually what a drain on our country support of Ukraine is. How we can afford tax cuts to the rich and corporations, but not benefits for ordinary families, children, and improvements in our road, bridges, wifi in rural areas, and health care for ordinary people in our country. God Bless all those who think they would get a better deal somewhere else, or with an administration that didn’t actually get elected by a popular majority of voters. God bless all those who believe only people who look and believe like them should have the vote, and who should control the lives of others who don’t have the same religious beliefs they have, even though they are in the minority of religious believers. Uh Oh! Does that mean, according to their values, that some other religious group should control things that they believe they should control? Ooops! Is that a little miscalculation? Hmmm… does that mean they are actually praying for something that is an abomination, according the the Bible they claim to believe is the revealed WORD of GOD? Hmmmm…. maybe a little re-thinking is in order…

Must be a Republican household, sending a (sorry, kids) fictional character to aid the Ukrainians. Have some thoughts and prayers, too.
