When I was a kid, I decided to emulate this comic and make shrunken heads of cartoon characters using Play-Doh, complete with stitched mouths.

I remember my collection featuring Daffy Duck, Mickey Mouse, Elmer Fudd, Stitch, and I believe Bugs Bunny.

I wonder what Symphony in Orange #2 will be like.

I kinda like Calvin’s shrunken heads idea. Plus my cats could play with them.

I’d like to see the likenesses of the cartoon character shrunken heads. Is Fred Flintston in there? Alley Oop? Micky Mouse, maybe?

I like Mom’s expression in panel 1. She thinks, of course, that Calvin himself made the sculpture. When she sees the heads that Calvin really did make, she looks horrified.

I’m imagining a close up of panel 3. Who is on that tray of heads? Popeye? Nancy? Calvin himself?

It all depends on who your target market is.

And it only cost her three smooches…

Now I know where Calvin gets his ‘ewwww scrunchie face’ expression.

In my experience becoming a successful artist requires three things, talent, luck, and self-confidence, with the latter quality often the most important.

I’m so sad Gocomics made this in reruns. I think everyone believes that Bill Watterson still makes Calvin and Hobbes comics. They ended December 31, 1995. I did believe too, until I saw the final.

I was going to say something at the end of this week about how Watterson was making some points as he often does about art and commercialism. But I know I can’t do better than how he concluded this story himself.

Hobbes gets the glory, as usual.

When it comes to marketability you can’t beat Hobbes.

Calvin is ahead of his time. Those would have been deemed wonderfully creative, and a statement about children’s cartoons, a couple of decades later.
