When I was about 7 years old, I looked out our kitchen window (which faces north) and I saw Santa and the reindeer coming. I called to my brothers and they looked and saw it too. I don’t know who did it or how they did it, but someone must have put that image in the sky. I wish they would have continued doing that and that someone would still be doing it, because it was really neat.

Those late night winter trips to the outhouse were brutal. Don’t believe me? Check out my avatar.

    I’m betting on Grandpa.

Santa would visit the house and eat his treats before visiting the outhouse.

When it’s cold outside, and the moon is high, when nature calls, you may get sick and almost die, and leave your loved ones alone to cry!

Red flannel “long johns” used to be a thing when I was a girl. And I remember seeing a cartoon by Nast, that pictured Santa in tight fitting fuzzy underwear. It’s possible that did give the legend a boost! And if you’ve never had to scurry out to “the back” in the middle of the night in cold winter you wouldn’t wonder why someone wore those red flannels!

Our extended family cabin has an unusual configuration; you have to go outside to get to the bathroom, which is modern, but the heat comes from the ceiling. In winter, your butt is almost frozen to the toilet seat, cause the heat never gets that low- the building has poor insulation and does not retain heat.

My great aunts lived right next to the mountain that went to the Poconos. They had a three seater. And when they put aluminium siding on the the two story house, they put it the outhouse.

My parents kept a couple of chamber pots in the house so we didn’t need to go out to the outhouse at nights or during inclement weather. Little kids don’t have much patience (and usually wait until the last minute) and by the time you bundled up for the trip and unbundled once you got there it was probably too late.
