So according to the copyright time stamp, if Charley Brown was 17 in 1968 and he was going to turn 18 two days later on Sunday, wouldn’t that make C.B. almost 71 years old today?

My 70th birthday will be on a Sunday…does that count?

The day of my youngest daughters 18th birthday; she was leaving to drive several hundred miles to an FHA conference. As I was helping her load her luggage into her car at five in the morning she said to me, " I was always told you had to leave home when you reached 18, but I didn’t know you had to leave before sun up".

How about just don’t have kids? That way it saves a lot of grief and misery for everyone involved.

I was about the kids age when this came out. Now I think all generations after mine should be kicked out to fend for themselves at 18. Bunch of whiners….;) (as every generation thinks the following ones are lacking and the ones before as well)

I think everyone should have to go to boot camp as soon as they graduate high school. Whether they go onto a military career or not is up to them.

There is something to be said about “The Greatest Generation” – almost all the men went through boot camp and the women were forced to make sacrifices for the “common good.” Few had the attitude, “It’s all about me.”

Boot camp is Mickey Mouse and silly regulations that seemingly have no point. If nothing else, it’s an opportunity to get in physical shape – a habit that, hopefully, one keeps for the rest of one’s life. If all of America were physically fit, our medical system would not be overtaxed and medical costs would be lower – the so called, “ounce of prevention” vs. the demanded “pound of cure.”

But beyond that, boot camp teaches teamwork. Drill instructors break you down as an individual and reassemble you back together as a team member. Being a team member does not mean you give up your freedom and become an automaton blindly obedient to authority. It means you have the maturity to make choices that benefit the group rather than your personal, selfish self. You “be the best you can be” because your talents are important to the team.

As Robert E, Lee rode to Appomattox, he knew that he was the leader of an army in rebellion against the United States. There is no clearer definition of treason than that. He was a traitor and traitors are hung. He knew he was a dead man. Yet he never pleaded his case with Grant. Instead his first words were, “My men are starving; can you help them?” This is called Servant Leadership – service to others before service to self.

Boot Camp isn’t the only means to this end, but it could be a very effective one.

Old Ugg the Caveman thought the cave kids were spoiled and ungrateful. It’s a universal part of the human experience. No matter what age you are now, when you were a teenager, old people thought your generation was lazy and disrespectful.

Charlie Brown came out in 1948! His Grandma would have been born circa 1900! Times have changed in 120 years. Kids at 40 still live at home and raise their kids to do the same! Old school thinking had reasons…

They actually kicked them out as soon as they became adults? What a terrible generation.

Got a 31 y/o in the basement that needs a kick like that but his Mama won’t let me.

Which is why the military recruiters target the high school juniors and seniors. Enlist at 18 and get 3 hots and a cot. The paycheck is small, but room and board are provided.

In 1970 I was 19 and joined the Air Force. I kicked myself out into the world.
