    “Turnip” is slang for a country bumpkin, a simpleton, or a fool. Maybe that is the usage Laura is going for.

    Reminded of when an Italian director offered Lucy Ricardo a bit part in his film “Bitter Grapes” and she researched the part by disguising herself as a grape stomper at a winery. It was only after she came back with purple skin after a fight with a regular stomper that he told her the title was metaphorical.
