I’ve never taught public high school. So a lot of high school students sleep in class? Bet in the back. Just sneak in at the end of the line and grab a desk in the back and take a nap? That’s what they get for putting 30 kids per class. It also explains the poor education American kids get – one of the worst K-12 public education systems in the world.
Miss. Edwards must be a superior teacher. She must have a lot to Integrity and self-Honor too. I have me a lot of people who were stuck in a wheelchair. They just went into their “cave” and hid from as much of the world as they could. Miss. Edwards though faces the world, and by her actions tell everyone who doesn’t like to “go jump in the proverbial lake”. She teaches Math, and does so make the subject interesting. Most of the math teachers that I remember made math a deadly dull subject. All this makes me think that Miss. Edwards is a superior teacher.
The girls seem to be in a high enough grade that they get to choose where they will sit. Especially in elementary school, we were assigned seats by our teachers.
I went to a small rural high school and was in that fairly small portion of it called “college prep”. As such, we often ended up with the same teachers more than once. Had a math teacher for three consecutive years. She was very good.
My girls have/had a great teacher for Orchestra/Choir (both girls were in orchestra; 1 in choir). This year my younger daughter’s AP schedule doesn’t mesh with the arts schedule. However, this teacher is allowing her to use one of her study periods to continue to practice, allow her to perform with the group, AND get class credit for it!
I know this is a common comic-strip trope, but I don’t remember any student ever falling asleep in any of my classes from kindergarten through 12th grade.
It did happen once in college. On a beautiful spring day, the professor noticed (it was a small class, not a large lecture) and told us that we could all leave early, if we were careful not to wake him. He woke hours later in a empty room, and even he was careful not to let it happen again.
Around this time, the newspapers began to colourize the daily strips and often without consulting the cartoonists’ own colour charts. This meant mismatched hair colours and different clothing in different papers. One newspaper colourist made the Miss Edwards character black, which made a change back to Caucasian rather difficult. Readers in that area appreciated seeing a black teacher in the mix. Eventually, correct colour palettes were established, but not before some interesting errors had been made!
Kindergarten was pretty much unknown when I was in school (1950-1962),. My father made it through 3rd grade, my mother made it through 8th grade. I managed to graduate high school in the public education system. Back then, we actually were taught well.
When I went to school in the ‘50s and ’60’s we had 50 kids in a class and everyone learned. I went to Catholic schools and the Nuns made you learn. I have heard they are still the best schools, not so many Nuns anymore.
US schools emphasize teaching students to pass the Federally mandated testing, “Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA)” by which schools and teachers are judged.
Duck, look at today’s wheelchair drawing. The hub of the big wheel is clearly attached to the back of the frame of the chair, and the front braces that hold up the foot rests and the front wheels are very clear. The “camera” is still too high to actually see the wheels or her feet, but the structure is there.
Okay, here is something relevant in more than one way but a tad random: It is useful to measure CO2 levels in classrooms to see if they are ventilating sufficiently to keep down any CoVID-19 virons which are perhaps being exhaled. Obviously, that does not measure the viral load, but the amount of CO2 gives an idea how well ventilation is working. A surprise came to some school administrators in multiple nations when this was done because some classrooms have such poor ventilation that the CO2 levels themselves are high enough with a class in them that that gas alone can cause drowsiness even with a good teacher leading the class. So, while using Hepa filters more for those rooms (NOT ionic approaches which can increase ozone and cause other problems) can help reduce illness from the classrooms — the classrooms badly need better ventilation to reduce the amounts of CO2, even without anyone sick in them.

Learn something new about the characters with this one. I did not know that Dawn’s goal in her classes was to fall asleep.

It would appear that CAPRICORN9TH needs to up her/his game before commenting again. Tough crowd but fair points to be made!

The real challenge is to practice the problems, something I didn’t get until grad school. Reality can’t be memorized.

I had a teacher that stayed with us for a couple of years in grade school. It was great. I guess that didn’t take off as a teaching technique. To bad.

Study after study has shown that kids need more sleep, yet we insist on getting them up at 6 AM or even earlier. Is it any wonder they sleep in class?
