As I’ve repeatedly said, I never grew up with a dog.

Must be his grandfather on his father’s side since later on Rerun wants a dog and his mother won’t let him have one (so he keeps asking Charlie Brown if he can borrow Snoopy).

What Linus says is kind of ironic because out of the hundreds of Peanuts strips I’ve seen and the TV shows, I can’t remember that Linus or Lucy ever having a dog. Actually none of the kids except for Charlie Brown and his sister had their own dog.

So the benefit of the dog is greater than the benefit of the doubt?

Personally, I’d prefer a dachshund like Calvin’s father.

We never had a dog, but we always had cats. I got along fine with other people’s dogs, but I wouldn’t want to have missed growing up with cats.

I think every kid ought to have (or live with) a cat or a dog. Or some other pet that can be a real friend.

That phrase seems to refer back to ‘without the benefit of marriage’

Ah, but one hasn’t lived until they’ve been owned by a cat.

How do I know this? My cat told me so.

The kid may have the dog, but many times, mom feeds it!

Clearly this Van Pelt Family Wisdom did not get applied to poor Rerun.

Not every child wants a dog, but every child who wants a dog should be allowed to have one. The strips where Rerun is pining for a dog make me sad… (The ones where Snoopy consents to play with Rerun make me happy; the two had a great relationship in the last few years of the strip.)

I feel that the Snoopster would be more of a subscriber to Mr. Peabody’s philosophy: “Every dog should have a boy.”

My brother had a cat when we were young (my cat allergy apparently hadn’t kicked in yet). Other than that beast, no pets in my life, and I don’t feel like I missed out on a thing.
