Has anyone pointed out to the bishops that poll after poll show Catholics as a group to be no more anti-choice than the American public in general? Note that Rhode Island is the most Catholic state in the country percentage-wise, and one of the states where reproductive rights are least threatened. Ditto for Massachusetts, New Jersey, New Mexico, and Connecticut, in a virtual four-way tie for second most Catholic state.

Don’t confuse rank and file Catholics with a group of out-of-touch bishops.

I don’t like any prelates telling me how to vote. Do these old goats expect to prove to Protestants that Catholics do march in lockstep? Perhaps they’d like to pay taxes as well for their unenforceable laws? Have they learned anything from Ireland, which legalized divorce, some abortions, and gay marriage in defiance of the prelates? Perhaps they want their perverted view of sex, going all the way back to the confusion of Saint Augustine between Manichean dualism and Christianity. I suppose they want to outlaw divorce, contraceptives, and manustupration as well. “Render unto Caesar what is Caesar’s and to God what is God’s”

These are, no doubt, the bishops appointed by John Paul II, who may well have violated Canon Law himself, and whose appointees are so right-wing that they have defied the Pope, who is the Vicar of Christ on Earth.

They should butt out of American politics. If they were so moralistic about #45, things might have been a bit different. Instead, they have compromised any moral authority they might have left – if they have any left after the horrific sins committed by priests and bishops against children.

There’s a reason why Bernard Cardinal Law — also appointed by John Paul II — died in exile in Rome. Perhaps they should learn from his example.

and “those messages from God” are no such thing tis messages from the cloven hoof and the forked tail. We need to start looking for exactly what’s underneath those fine garments the bishops in the Catholic Church steal from the poor. Beelzebub, no doubt

Just to point out a matter of objective reality: priests are no more likely to commit sex abuse than are other clerics of other denominations (or other religions entirely, or no religion at all). It’s the kick-the-can-down-the-road (moving priests from one parish to another, and covering up the reasons) that was always the problem. And here in Missouri the recent scandals all involve Protestant “schools” and camps. (I suppose I should put quotes around “Protestants” also, because, though they are fundamentalist, they sure as hell aren’t Christian.) The majority of sexual abusers are teachers, coaches, child care workers, and (most likely of all) RELATIVES.

For anyone that thought Pope Francis might be more progressive, forget about it. After at least 4 decades of inaction on canon law, there are finally directives added for any clergy to be reported and prosecuted for abuse of minors. But what was also added was a directive that says that anyone who dares to ordain a woman will be immediately excommunicated along with the woman.

Seems Uncle Joe should renounce Rome, the Pope and all they stand for, openly supporting ideas & programs that the Catholic Church sees as a mortal sin. Besides why would Biden want to be part of such a backward belief system, there must be some new age Methodist Rainbow Flag waving, Birth Control Clinic in the Basement Church that would except anyone as long as your Check clears.

Biden and Pelosi should consider the Episcopal church. They have had women as clergy for a LONG time. The hen EC decided to ordain LGBTQ, several of their male clergy left and were allowed to become Catholic priests even if they were married with children.

Allowing others to follow their own moral compass for reproduction or any other choices follows the 1st amendment. Forcing religion on others should disqualify a candidate – UNCONSTITUTIONAL!

Why does it take an atheist to point out the blatantly obvious problem here?

CC doctrine is respect for life at all stages. That means no murder, capital punishment, suicide, euthanasia or abortion. This is one of the bedrock principles of the Church and simply cannot be violated without committing a mortal sin.

Any Catholic who commits any of the acts listed above MUST repent or face eternal damnation. Absent confession and absolution the person is most certainly NOT eligible to partake of the Eucharist. This is not political, it is not retaliatory. It is basic Church law.

The Bishops should not have to take this action. It is redundant. Catholic Priests should have been denying Communion to ALL persons taking a public stance against Church doctrine. That means ALL people who publicly support murder, capital punishment, suicide, euthanasia or abortion.

In turn, self-identified Catholics who support any of the above need to either change their views or find a different church. There are a dozen or more Christian denominations that permit abortion under a variety of circumstances. Join a sect that you AGREE WITH.

The bishops can propagandize all they want, though imo it makes them look like juvenile bullies. But when it comes right down to it, the confessional has only two people in it, and NEITHER of them is one of those bishops. In fact, they aren’t even ALLOWED to set that kind of policy, though they are (obviously) allowed to yammer about it.

Ah! Welcome to the neo-Spanish Inquisition à la American Catholicism showing the jackleg far-right-wing evangelical Christians and the QAnon pikers how to repress thought and free will on a massive (pun intended) scale. If men could get pregnant, abortion would be a sacrament.

I so hate “organized religion” – it seems to do far more harm than good. So it’s OK for priests to molest alter boys, but not OK for a world leader to support the notion that women should have control over their own bodies? Pathetic.

When there are five Catholic justices on the SCOTUS you get rulings that favor religion over reason. I would wish that when one of these cases are heard before the court somebody would insist that Jesus would be issued a summons to appear so that he can explain under no uncertain terms how it is that gay is such a sin. Or better yet, Daddy God Him Self to explain why he created a sub set of human for no other reason than as a target for abuse.
