Why does it take an atheist to point out the blatantly obvious problem here?
CC doctrine is respect for life at all stages. That means no murder, capital punishment, suicide, euthanasia or abortion. This is one of the bedrock principles of the Church and simply cannot be violated without committing a mortal sin.
Any Catholic who commits any of the acts listed above MUST repent or face eternal damnation. Absent confession and absolution the person is most certainly NOT eligible to partake of the Eucharist. This is not political, it is not retaliatory. It is basic Church law.
The Bishops should not have to take this action. It is redundant. Catholic Priests should have been denying Communion to ALL persons taking a public stance against Church doctrine. That means ALL people who publicly support murder, capital punishment, suicide, euthanasia or abortion.
In turn, self-identified Catholics who support any of the above need to either change their views or find a different church. There are a dozen or more Christian denominations that permit abortion under a variety of circumstances. Join a sect that you AGREE WITH.
