I guess that as with the Salamander Incident and the Noodle Incident, we’re meant to imagine for ourselves what happened to Dad’s car and why Calvin asks Dad whether he remembers it as if it no longer existed!
Today’s strip reminds me of the later story arc in which both Calvin and Hobbes tried running away from home after Hobbes helped Calvin move the car – and it rolled into the ditch. Hobbes isn’t at all to blame this time so he doesn’t try to run away with Calvin.
Hobbes is partly based on Bill Watterson’s brother Tom. This is especially obvious in strips where Calvin and Hobbes share Calvin’s bedroom. I suspect that both incidents where Calvin tries running away when he is afraid that he has damaged a parent’s car are based on a real-life incident from Watterson’s childhood – possibly involving both Watterson brothers.
Okay, I’m not saying running away is a good idea, but I suspect a little distance between him, the scene of the crime and the pending interrogation/punishment is not a bad idea.

“El Fugitivo” was on Spanish TV when this strip first came out. Apparently it was huge. Never watched it.

If Calvin’s going to be a fugitive, he might as well change his name to Richard Kimble…
