Shouting “Fire!” in a packed theater is not protected speech. Not promoting a questionable Russian operation against the American people until the authorities have a chance to decide its authenticity is a reasonable procedure. Attacking twitter over its caution in this one particular incident is contributing to the downward spiral of the political conversation.
Maybe twitter should have posted with the warning in large red letters “STINKS TO HIGH HEAVEN. ONLY COMPLETE IDIOTS WOULD GIVE IT ANY CREDENCE AT THIS TIME”.
Censorship laws apply only to the state. Private companies are allowed to regulate content in their media. It’s perfectly OK for Twitter to decide that they won’t allow harmful conspiracy theories to use their forum.
US spies say the Hunter Biden email controversy shows how ‘exploitable’ and ‘grotesquely vulnerable’ Trump and Giuliani are to Russian intelligence-
Most of all, Russia has a strategic objective to “make America dysfunctional because what’s bad for America is good for Russia,” Carle added. “So if they can sow dissension in our political practices that discredits our institutions and disaffects Americans from participating in the democratic process, then America crumbles.”
“If happy little bluebirds fly / Beyond the rainbow / Why O Why / Can’t I?” “Over the Rainbow” from The Wizard of Oz: music by Harold Arlen with lyrics by Yip Harburg (1939).
so many of you miss the point. A private company can make and enforce their own rules. However, there is the Platform vs. Publisher issue that is relevant here. A publisher is legally liable/responsible for their content where a platform is protected. In general, if you censor(which is your right) then you cannot benefit from the legal liability. All the social media platforms need to choose and stick with what they want to operate as.
Somehow, if Twitter removes false content after Trump rails and rails that they should do it – it’s censorship because Twitter removed GOP false content. And when Trump threatens to take away broadcast licenses of media he doesn’t like, or to shut down social media, conservatives DON’T think that’s a threat of censorship…
Conservatives crack me up. They are constantly complaining about how we don’t teach civics in school, but they don’t seem to know those civics themselves.
The US Constitution and the Bill of Rights are about what the Government can do and not do. They are not about what private business can and can not do. My daughter has a part time job in a store in Maine is constantly having to argue with patrons who refuse to put on masks claiming that it’s their right not to wear one. She has to point to the sign that says “No shoes, No shirt, No mask, NO SERVICE”. It’s a private business feel free to shop elsewhere.
Twitter, Facebook, The New York Times, the Washington Examiner, Fox News, PBS are all private businesses and have right to enforce whatever standards they want to. It is not censorship to say that they find a particular thing offensive and refuse to print it. The newspaper does not have to print your letter. The TV station does not have to run your ad. And Twitter does not have to print your tweet.
Apparently Lester feels that republicans should be allowed to spread lies and unfounded accusations everywhere and should also be allowed to publish the private shone numbers and e-mail addresses of Democrats so that viscous bigots can harass and threaten them with impunity. (the republican version of the first amendment).
I see that Ramirez (and people like etonry and the 12 year old) think that everyone and anyone is required to repeat “free speech” regardless of whether the “free speech” is false, harmful, derogatory, obscene, etc. No doubt they would agree to repeat defamatory remarks about themselves, too. Because “free speech!”
Mac a ninny lied and got suspended by Twitter and then cried like a 3 year old that her lies were being censored. Above the law republicans never feel like they have to obey any rules that apply to the common people.
Of course as a privately owned company, Twitter is not covered by the 1st Amendment and can poop on free speech all they want. Still does not make it right. Let all ideas be expressed and let the free market of ideas work its way out.
Blocking Russian propaganda peddled by Rudy and a desperate Rump isn’t censorship, it acting responsibly. If you want propaganda ,go to Crox News. They are only news outlet covering the Russian news stories like they are true.

It is not the responsibility of a private media company to promote Russian propaganda. That’s a job for Fox News.

I remember a newspaper editor who refused to run a kkk ad. The guy demanded his freedom of the press. She said you have that, just go buy a press.

fusilier, wondering why there’s no problem with Sheldon Adelson donating $75 million to the Trump campaign.

We really need to get some oversight of our social media. I know conservatives think “oversight” is a bad word, but I guess we all know why that is.
