Horses are well known to shy at sticks that look like snakes, rocks that look like predators and spooky sounds.

You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make her fight river monsters.

My first horse (not pictured) would cross rivers and creeks without hesitation, but he’d tip toe around puddles.

My current horse (see icon) has no trouble with ponds or rivers, but fears the ocean with its waves, as if he had seen Jaws. My last horse feared nothing but approaching air brakes which always seemed reasonable to me. On trails I am often called to the front to prove to other horses that things wont, after all, eat them

Which Piscataqua River? There’s one between Kittery ME and Portsmouth NH, and another one north of Bangor. I think they live in NORTHERN Maine!

Considering that the Piscataqua river is formed by the confluence of the Cocheco and Salmon Falls Rivers, it is at no time so narrow as to be a brook.

I’ve always felt that Nature is BEST enjoyed from inside. . .looking out the window (house/car/train/bus). . .or between the covers of a book. . .say, Gerald Durrell’s “My Family and other Animals”. . .
