What does the US not being prepared for a long-predicted pandemic have to do with a suspected, but not proven cause? Our strife is due to the lack of intelligent preparation/coordination in the current administration, isn’t it? Didn’t the resident suppress factual information about the true nature of the SARA-Cov-2 much longer that Xi did?
“The notion of the federal stockpile was it’s supposed to be our stockpile,” Kushner said at a White House news briefing Thursday. “It’s not supposed to be the states’ stockpiles that they then use.”
I shake my head as I read the ignorant comments. What part of this do you not understand? The virus started in a wet market in Wuhan, and because the communists that rule China wouldn’t accept our help, it got out of hand and has spread across the globe. It’s not racists to state the ugly truth. Get a grip, dumb commentators.
This seems to be a common theme among the right wing commentators. More xenophobia is not going to help and it always results in innocent people being targeted by the idiots it influences. In short Mr. Ramirez it is beyond irresponsible, bordering on malicious.
I’m amazed at the commenters that seem to be ignoring the facts that China admitted that SARS and the Coronavirus came out of these meat markets and are using this pandemic to slam the republicans rather then strive to get China to shut the markets down. Or are these ‘people’ really paid chinese hackers trying to deflect any blame from China?
Actually, Comic man is correct. No, I don’t listen or watch any news. I do read the LA Times, The Economist, and BBC online, the New Yorker and Wired online. I get daily briefs from Nature. None of my sources are fright-wing sources. None of them are pro-Trump.
The virus did spread from a Wuhan “wet market.” There is no doubt about it.
Remember that Ebola was traced to “bush meat” — wild monkeys caught and sold in African “wet markets.”
The Chinese government did downplay the outbreak at first, as when the opthamologist was threatened and harassed. And he contracted the virus while doing a Glaucoma test on a worker from the wet market, The close proximity required for the test and the infection load of the worker pretty much guaranteed he would get a dose heavy enough to kill.
The Chinese government did indeed refuse outside help when the virus began gathering attention from the rest of the world. They did provide some information about the virus, but no samples. Labs around the world were able to figure out what they were dealing with but it was harder than if they had received samples.
It must be remembered that China is not a Western country. This will be true especially in the country. Not so many “factory farms” there. So people working more closely with animals, enabling transfer of viruses from animals to humans.
The Chinese eat virtually anything. Shark fin soup. Bird’s Nest Soup. About 40 years ago a Chinese-American coworker gave me a Chinese cookbook (in English). Stuff I would never think of eating. Paul Theroux wrote in “Riding the Iron Rooster” about his train trips in China more than 30 years ago of being offered a songbird in a market to eat. He did buy it, but released it.
And there is the incredible mythology of "traditional medicine’ in China. Rhino horn aphrodisiac? Etc. Much is made of the “powers” of exotic animals. And the communist government only gives lip service to suppressing the crap.
Mao was known to try various treatments to extend his life and virility. (But this crap is everywhere. Remember the virgin girls being raped in Africa by men with HIV who thought that would cure them?)
Ignorance breeds stupid ideas, some of which are criminal.
Another thing about the Chinese was pointed out by Theroux. He mentioned it often, trust me (practically every other page). This was the Chinese habit of spitting everywhere. Sidewalks? Check. Carpets on trains? Check. Seriously, he kept track and it was damn gross.
It wasn’t just him making the observation, though. Before the 2008 Olympics in China, the government had to crack down on public spitting. They did not want to become a target of ridicule. While the habit may be less than it was when Theroux wrote about it, it surely is still present. One reason to order people to wear masks — anywhere, including the US.
The Chinese government may have ordered the closing of “wet markets” (rather late), but they will need to enforce it seriously.
Bad Habits and traditions die hard in any country.
But there is also no question that Trump played the “blame it on China” card. It is how he operates.
Never mind that he then tried to shrug off the seriousness of the threat.
Never mind doing away with people and agencies that could have helped — if they had had a President who would listen.
Shallow minds love to have someone else to blame their problems on, and Trump leads the world there. And Chinese Americans did feel threatened as a result of racists following Trump’s cue. They never need much to do so.
And now we have loony-toon dock workers using trains to try and attack health care provides, and other loonies threatening Dr Fauchi — because he doesn’t grovel before Trump.
It’s the magic of the free market! Mr. Ramirez, surely you wouldn’t endorse the CCP TYRANNICALLY AND SOCIALISTICALLY shutting down those wet markets, would you. /s

How the virus originated is debatable, but where it originated isn’t. The actions of the CCP allowed the virus to spread and become a pandemic.

The actions of our prez set the stage to allow the surge here.

And yet, the outbreak in China is waning daily. Probably because of those socialist policies and we all know that cure is worse than the disease.

Trump knew about the virus in Dec 2019 and failed to act for a quarter year.
How many deaths that will add up to is unknown at the moment.
