He misplaced it, though. It was traditional to place the moai at the outer edge of the village (the property in this case) looking inwards, so that the spirit of the ancestor who resides in the statue could watch over and protect everyone in the clan.

Works really well when you have teen-age daughters. They and their boyfriends are less likely to get overly frisky when spooning on the front porch, when they can see a 30’ statue inhabited by Great Grandfather’s ghost staring right at them…

Apparently McPherson has HEARD OF Moai, but he has never actually SEEN one — or even a photo of one.

And it only weighs three kilotons.

Which is exactly why they search the tourists leaving Easter Island. Apparently, this guy has skills.

He should have asked the owners of Hobby Lobby to get it through Customs, seems they can get almost any religious artifact into their collection.
