I have half of a closet and one dresser. My wife has 1-1/2 closets, 3 dressers, and other “storage areas”. Then again, she used to work at a department store. “They were on sale, and I got my employee discount, so they were practically free!”
My ex and I shared 12 feet of closet behind 4 slider doors. I got one door, some; and she got three. And a half. One spring, labeled each of her 30 sweaters with “today’s” date. That fall, while trying to cram a few more sweaters in, she noticed the labels and became extremely irate when I explained that she could simply wear a sweater after taking off the label, and in a couple or three years, I’d go through the closet and give any still-labeled sweaters to a charity of her choice. Extremely irate.
My current spouse and I share a walk in closet w/ two sides. She has all of the left side, the end, and 2/3 of the right side. But, having lived through it once before, the dividing line on the right is some fixed-in-place shelving, so there can be no confusion about where it is. I get that and about 2 feet of hanger space. She gets a similar amount of shelving, 12 feet of shoe-rack, 15 feet of hanger space and all the floor space under anybody’s hanging clothing. And boxes and bags stacked in the middle.
My step-dad had a bad habit of saving terrible clothes that went out of style 20-30 years prior. (He wore an original leisure suit to their wedding in the late 1990s.) My mom remedied this by once a month waiting until he was driving truck cross country, go though their closet, pick out 1 to 3 items of his she didn’t like, throw them away, and then buy him something she did like. It amazed me that it didn’t bother him that she did that.
One of my mom’s friends who’s husband was also a truck driver tried that, but she quickly learned she had to wait until he’d be on the road on garbage day. Otherwise he’d come home and rummage though the trash to get back what she threw out.
I’ll be honest, I’ve given away, thrown away and worn out more clothes than I’ll ever wear. When I retired 2 years ago I firmly promised myself that I would not buy any more clothes. So far, I haven’t.
But I thought Val was a modern women, not tied to silly notions like stylish clothes. I thought that was only for Holly. See where she gets it, Val? And I bet, like me—yes, I include myself—she only wears about 1/4 of them with any regularity.
One of things that irks me in Australia. No built in closets!! We have a wardrobe, and a dresser. And two bins under the tv table. Over the last month we’ve been clearing out things that don’t fit and are in good condition to give away (the bag got dropped at the op shop Friday, yay! And space bags have become my best friend sigh
So Many Items of deja vu in the comments here. I too have a wife that has articles of clothing many years old that still have the tags on. I tease her that if I ever want to commit suicide I will just climb up on top of her clothes pile and jump off.
We’re doing an estate cleanup for a trucker friend. We are still finding clothes with tags from retailers that have been gone for decades. I have one 5’ tall box in the garage ready to go to Sally Ann, all new stuff. We’re not done by a long shot. Plan is to get a 45’ seacan and move as much in there so house can be renovated. That doesn’t include the farm yard with five, count-em, five dead Massey harvesters.
I have a 4×4 armoire. Left side is shelves for folding clothes and bedding. Right side is a hanging rack for shirts, suit coats and dress pants. What is this closet thing people talk about?
Thanks goodness I am a married gay man. There is no “his” side or “my side.” We wear the same sized shirts. Now in the drawer where jeans and slacks are kept—my expanding waist line says we have different drawers. But the rest of the closet and bureaus are “ours.”
I read all the above comments. No one needs 2/3ds of the closet, which is definitely aggressive behavior in taking it. I have always used a spare bedroom closet for most of my clothes, and that puts an end to any conflict.

Holly’s in training… obviously learned her lessons well.
My wife’s clothing encroached on my “half” long ago. I have clothes on an external rack, which isn’t so bad as they are accessible.

2 of my shirts are in the wash, the other 2 are hanging on the door knob. My work boots I’m wearing, my dusty flip flops sit by the welcome matt.

Sadly, my clothes have been relegated to the second bedroom, only because we have very small closets, really small.
