Amazing things often have humble beginnings. Why, Play-Doh, the most malleable, colorful, and arguably edible modeling compound in modern history was originally created as a wallpaper cleaner. Back in the 1930s, many homes were heated by coal, which produced enough residual soot to warrant folks stamping their walls with semi-sticky gunk to get it off. A company called Kutol cranked out a solution, but by the mid '50s a teacher recognized that the mix of flour, water, salt, boric acid, and mineral oil (and other stuff) was way more fun to use as a nondrying clay for kids. More than six decades and 700 million pounds of production later, the internet takes September 16 to celebrate Play-Doh Day.
