If comedy is built on the rule of three, I have a fair guess about tomorrow’s strip.

Even when it’s not the same question, it feels like Caulfield does the same thing over and over and over again.

Caulfield is wasting the classes’ time being ‘smart’.

It saved Jef from having to draw the first two panels, and made me think that GoComics screwed up and failed to update the comic. So I guess that’s a twofer.

As pointed out yesterday, The definition of practice is doing the same thing over and over and expecting better results.

You try to plug the USB into the port, it doesn’t fit. So you turn it the other way, it still doesn’t fit. But then you turn it back to the first way, and now it fits. Every single time.

Doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results is just called “working with a PC.”

He just acted out what he described yesterday. And he knows it. Fewer laughs means his classmates are just tired of his histrionics. Happens to all of us at some time.

So…. what does this mean that Caulfield thinks about practicing? I mean, hell, Frazz practices all the time…. this is a bit of a conundrum.

I was wondering if today had suddenly become February 2nd.

Expecting more laughs the second time you tell a joke is indeed insane.

He won’t make it as a stand-up comic…needs to update his material!

Repeating the same joke on a different night to a different audience is probably OK in a comedy club, but really, who’d be dumb enuf to repeat the same joke on the same night to the same audience — and expect more laughs?

The real definition of insanity is firmly believing in something that has been clearly proven to be False.

If you are doing the same thing over and over when you practice you will never improve. The goal of practice is to identify flaws and to change them, so that each iteration is somewhat different and hopefully better than the last. Therefore the joke is invalid due to poor practice habits. All you gain if you practice the same thing over the same way is a more polished approach to doing it wrong.

My first response was to click back to yesterday’s comic. Then I double checked the date. Then I came back here and double checked the date. Then I read today’s whole comic. Then I thought “Pretty cheap, Mallett, using the same artwork two days in a row”. At no point did Caulfield garner even a chuckle.

Practice is doing the same thing over and over, and IMPROVING results.

If you’re past your peek, practice will just cushion your fall.
