I am not sure that a can of cat food costs much different than a can of potted meat or tuna for human consumption. Maybe it does.

Anyway. As for the cat just put out dry cat food. The cat may turn its nose up at it for a while, but when the cat figures out that is all it’s going to get, it’s not going to go on a hunger strike.

Several years ago one of the big stories going around was about the poor retirees on SS eating dog food to save money. One nutritionist was asked about the problems of people eating dog food. She said that actually all things taken into account the dog food was probably much better for the than people food. The dog food was made without all of the added ingredients and fillers of the people version. If you can hold your nose and ignore the source of the meat dog food is a better food source than the stuff that is passed off as food for humans and don’t think you are doing your dog a favor by giving him people food.

Luckily, up here in that ‘socialist country’ Canada, the safety net for seniors is pretty reasonable, so they do not have to resort to eating Alpo. A country that does not care for its most vulnerable citizens is not a country to emulate. Just sayin…

She probably likes variety. At least in the second to last panel Muffin shows that she appreciates the effort, if not the result …

We had a cat once that tended to get kidney stones, for which the vet recommended only distilled water for drinking, and canned food with less than 2% “ash” content.

Fortunately, the label of every can of cat food made the ash content plain and explicit so we could keep Yang on his special diet.

Which is something you can’t say about human food.

This is one of the dumber urban rumors. Canned products for people are much cheaper than catfood, plus catfood has way too much protein compared to our needs. Dry dogfood is a much better choice.

I was going to tell a funny story about my mother and her cat until I read the last panel. Suddenly it seemed very inappropriate.

Reminds me of the Honeymooners episode where Ralph found a dish of dog food in the icebox and thought it something Alice had prepared. He took some to work and fed it to his boss, with the idea of marketing it as a home made appetizer.

Several years ago I knew a young man who’d been homeless & had eaten so much cat food, he’d actually gotten to like the stuff.

timbob2313: I was thinking the same thing. Maybe it was different back then, but if a senior citizen is unable to pay for their own food and have to rely on food stamps they wouldn’t be able to buy cat/dog food with the money. It only pays for food for human consumption, not pet food. Of course possibly the man was speaking from a cat owners perspective of what his cat liked. Who knows.

Actually Fancy —- cat food runs over $5 a pound. There are cheaper human nutrition foods out there. Part of the problem is junk food is cheaper than preparing food, and doesn’t require effort to prepare, which is why some folks don’t eat well.
