Katniss? (Beginner’s luck if you ask me of Luann getting the bull’s eye… like Daniel LaRusso catching a housefly with chopsticks whereas Mr. Miyagi hadn’t yet for a long time.)

Tara isn’t that good of an instructor if she lets Luann hold the arrow with her index finger and thumb. An arrow is held properly between the index and second fingers.

Luann is becoming thoroughly hooked on Tara, her lifestyle, and her attitudes about having fun, and becoming more like her all the time.

No way she regrets cutting the study session.

I like the way Greg draws Luann with her tongue out in panel 2 to show her level of effort. That’s very old school cartooning.

I send thanks today to Airman and others here who have served.

Today I was thinking of a man with whom I conversed years ago. He had served in WWI and mentioned the mud. It was not till years later that I realized just how bad the mud was then for those who served in the First World War. There were boarded walkways in a number of areas. The people or animals of burden who fell from them sank and drowned in the mud; that is how deep it went.

He realized that I could not truly comprehend. I think that he felt both isolated by that but grateful for it. I think that each generation affected so deeply by a war wants the younger generations to have a better enough experience to not understand many aspects of the pain.

Yet there seems to be a risk for our nation that is inherent in people not having skin in the “game”. Compare how people affected by the draft wanted to learn not only about the history and reasoning behind the wars in our lifetimes, but also why they were being fought including what was being protected at home. Now compare that to many of the younger generations — at least the ones who have not served. There too often is a lack of understanding, lack of sympathy, and lack of respect both for those who serve and for what they protect. An excellent example is how few younger people can explain why the First Amendment is the very foundation for every other freedom we have in the United States, and how few of them can name what the First Amendment covers. Perhaps having a draft, despite how much we of my own generation wanted it done away with, helps protect our nation by forcing us to learn and appreciate. It forces us onto a walkway.

So, we find ourselves in a time when there are people those who do only lip service (a cheap out) to the military instead of actually trying to find ways to help at any point in their lives, a time when others actually are worse than that, and a time when there is downright attacking of the First Amendment, of the Balance of Powers, and of other essential components of our democratic republic.

For those who do not know: The First Amendment provides protection for Free Speech (and, yes, that includes taking a knee to call attention to issues). It permits Assembly (yet there are those who want to run down demonstrators). It contains Freedom of Religion (and despite that we have religious bigots). It protects a Free Press (and the Founders considered the press and the discussions on educated viewpoints to be part of the absolutely essential support our nation needs for its survival rather than attacking news sources who disagreed with them), and it permits the Petitioning of Congress (which you may not appreciate but they sure understood what it was like to not have representation or response to communications, so try to appreciate that this is one of those instances when a previous generation protected us and do not underestimate the importance).

So, thank you, especially today, to those who served, and for the foundations of our freedoms which your serving helps to preserve. You and they also provide depth as well as protection for our country. May that depth educate us and support our foundation.

May we learn to not muddy it with hatred, with intellectual laziness and lack of responsibility, or with a tendency to treat elections as if they were a team sport instead of learning the issues and demanding candidates who respect the Constitution and other people, and may we and the younger generations no longer stray into so much avoidance of learning and responsibility that it causes us to fall from the walkway and drown our nation, our freedoms, our respect for others, and ourselves in the mud of that lazy, hateful ignorance.

If this was Luann’s first shot – she was very lucky – although Tara probably did the aiming for her. Nice view of Tara in the first frame – Wow! In the third frame Tara is enjoying Luann’s progress just like Luann was enjoying Fay’s progress. Did I say that Tara is gorgeous?

Some Luann fans say it’s irrelevant to go into how Tara got into trouble at the University. I’m hoping we find out some more – as it would make an interesting character even more interesting. It seems like Luann & Tara spent some time together – but we haven’t heard them discuss guys. No doubt they did. If they go clubbing – I think Tara would boost Luann’s confidence – and the two would get a lot of attention. BTW – Hats off to Luann for not being snotty to Jack the Neanderthal – but I don’t think Jack is a keeper. What if Luann & Tara run into Quill somewhere and Tara really likes him. For Luann – that would be like trying to smile while she’s eating a cactus.

Maybe it could be more like a “Mad” parody, called “The Bore-dum Games” (just as a fun take on the “Hunger Games”, and incorporating Tara’s taking Lu away from the Bio Lab ‘study hall’)… Lu’s name could even be hyphenated, like: “Kantmiss Evrye-Ting”.

    -

Or for “Brave”, it could be “Crave” (also incorporating ‘blowing off’ school, but done as a “Scottish Highlands” sort of background), with a Sean Connery (“James Frond, a Truant Officer who thinks he can work the Community Campus/Pitts area environs”) and Montgomery “Scotty” Scott (cameo as "Sulkrates, a Greek professor with a Canadian-Scotts accent and a hint-of slightly-overly-dramatic flair, maybe ‘for the fun of it’ [Dean Captaine! The Copier is on the fritz…and I cahn’t seem to get it scanning, or printing…it’ll probably take another half hour or so!]).

Every time I wait until the morning and scroll the comments I say to myself uh oh!! Personally to me the best thing is that Luann is doing something new with an attractive new character, and the potential for this as a plot addition to Luann and Luannverse is big. Details about the archery, or what you call it seem pretty immaterial and unimportant to me.

I still say Tara is somehow affiliated with Ann Eiffel’s business, which also has to do with the stolen TV. Tara is earning Luann’s trust by being a fun pal. But later, she’ll ask Luann to do something potentially illegal.

Watching Luann and Tara, this week, I have to wonder if there is more to it than what’s happening, “short term.” They seem to be developing common interests and, perhaps, a true “friendship.” I have to wonder if Tara will, eventually, replace Bernice as Lu’s BFF. And the fact that Tara was involved in the thievery in Bernice’s dorm while she was the Dorm monitor might serve as fuel to Lu’s/Bern’s eventual “head to head” confrontation with each other. I can see Lu having an Epiphany about how Bern has treated her and ending that relationship. This potential outcome may be, of course, why Lu has not yet (and may never) matriculate(d) to Moony (i.e. to keep some “convenient” distance between Lu and Bern). Will be very interesting to see what happens in the future with this “triangle.”

Luann, You’re off to a Good Start, with these ‘lessons.’

And Archery is a skill that will come in handy one day, very soon, when Society finally Collapses under its own weight and You’re forced to “live off the land,” and You debate, with drawn Bow, whether to shoot that “Cute Little Deer,” or STARVE to Death….,

When shooting archery, you do not pick right or left handed based on your normal orientation. You determine your dominate eye. Make an open triangle with your one thumb over the other other and fingers over fingers. Start with it at arm length. Focus on the bull’s eye. Draw your hand back toward your face. Your dominate eye with pull your triangle to it. I am right handed, but have a dominate left eye, so I shoot left handed.

I’m trying to think why Greg would have chosen archery over any other sport that he could let Tara have the expertise to teach. Watching them aim at a target and hit it , maybe there is some analogy with having goals in life and aiming for them with ‘precision’ and ‘accuracy’; the bulls eye is often used in text books to explain those two concepts.

Actually, shooting firearms and hitting the center of the target is just as satisfying, it’s just not politically correct according to the bigger news outlets.

Guns are mostly associated with killing and murder. You don’t need to kill the target; you just have to reach it. And there is something about archery and sketching a person who is pulling the bow poised and ready; it looks more graceful (even artistic) than someone holding a gun.
