“Breaking Bad’s” name is too long……it should just be “Bad”. What a waste of air space.

Don’t do “binge viewing,” kids! Look what it will do to you!

I watched the first episode of “Mad Men” out of curiosity -and got hooked, and binged myself up to where I am now waiting for the current season to start.

Everybody has different tastes. I don’t watch a lot of TV, but I will start watching a series and then get bored with it (though I tend more towards sitcoms than serials). I have gotten series on DVD, and same thing: I watch a few episodes and then peter out: even with series I like. And I have a stack of $5 bargain-bin classic movies waiting to be watched..OTOH, I can (and do) binge-read a comic strip, thanks to the web!

Mine was Dexter. Is it normal to be in love with a serial killer? 8 seasons in 8 days. And still worked a 40 hour week.

I watched 2 episodes and didn’t get hooked.

However, I binge-watch shows that I like…Justified via Amazon Prime, Supernatural, Lilyhammer, Hemlock Grove, Firefly, Doctor Who, Endeavor, Korean and Japanese dramas, and many many more on Netflix streaming.

I watched the first season of Breaking Bad, hoping I was going to like it. Nope. But there are a lot of TV dramas that really repulse me. I like films.

There are very very VERY few tv series that I can binge. Most I’ll drop half way through a season just because it got too stupid. Quite frankly, I can’t think of any off the top of my head that I’ve watched completely. I just find most tv horrible. And saying ’don’t judge a tv series by a few episodes’ is comical. That’s EXACTLY how they’re judged to see if they’re even going to make it to tv and stay there!

I can easily accept that challenge. I lost my ability to tolerate commercials a few years ago. Now if I sit to watch TV as soon as a commercial comes on I’ll think to myself “I’ve got time to do…” and I never get back to the program because I’m easily distracted……OH LOOK A SQUIRREL!

For me it’s the Simpsons and Big Bang Theory. Never miss it. Daughter’s pushing Breaking Bad, but I can’t show even an iota of interest. Watched House for a long time ’cause of Hugh Laurie (Big fan, all the way back to British TV), but the show became a bit too repetitive and hence predictable.

I just did that with Game of Thrones, I watched all 3 seasons in under 2 weeks. I then spent longer reading the first 3/4 of the first book before just reading something else.

Now I’m watching the entire run of the newer Battlestar Galactica.

I read the books first, and that motivated me to watch the TV shows. The TV version is a very close interpretation of the books — the main change was the combination of some characters (given that the books have thousands of named characters, some consolidation was necessary, so audiences could keep track). -The Game of Thrones is being played by the seven ruling families of Westeros, plus several minor families and characters. It is NOT just about the Starks. -As for the deaths — the land is in a state of WAR — people die. -If you don’t think the story is moving along; you need to start paying attention. Plots are thickening, characters are being developed, intrigue is getting increasingly intriguing, and a huge climax is building, like the steady, inexorable rise of a mountain range.

Yes, most episodic TV programs have an over-arching soap-opera arc. There is also some good character development (for some of the main characters — the others remain simple archetypes). -However, the plots of the individual episodes remain simplistic, compared to serialized programs. -There are also more hybrid programs — where there’s a long (non-soap-opera) story arc, and a different story each episode. “The Mentalist” is (was) an example of a hybrid. We got a new crime every episode; and there was the overarching “Red John” arc. It’s something — but, not enough to hook most people into binge watching the series. -The non-broadcast (pay cable or pay streaming) TV offerings are much better than ever. They have to be good, to entice people to pay to watch them. They aren’t made for the lowest common denominator.
