We have had a bad stretch of weather in our area the last few days, and a couple of the fine folks on the Nextdoor app have been connecting the recent flooding rain and hail storms to the Aurora Borealis event. And no, they aren’t trolling- they’re quite serious about it.

As it happens, a friend and I were just last week watching a 2020 British thriller mini-series COBRA. (No snakes or Stallone involved—it’s mostly politics, and Cabinet Office Briefing Room A is the equivalent of the White House Situation Room.) The first season deals with a crisis arising from a solar flare that disrupts communications and power systems in Britain.

(I saw no Aurora Borealis here in Vancouver BC, although there are reports from some more rural areas.)
