A rare occasion….dining out. Had sushi this evening plus hot sake. It was great but there is always that warning for senior pluggers and raw food. I made sure I had extra sake to ward off microbes. So much sake that I had my beloved wife, who drank tea, drive home.

I grew up as a non-Catholic in a predominantly Catholic small town in the midwest. The school had no cafeteria so country kids had to bring their lunches and eat in the school library. A lot of high schoolers would eat lunch at the town cafe instead. Fish Friday was a Catholic tradition [abstaining from eating meat] that was observed throughout the year. That meant Mac ’n Cheese or fried catfish at the cafe instead of hamburgers and hot beef sandwiches. My friends would moan and groan but I loved it —the Mac ’n Cheese was much better than we made at home. And I often pointed out that they could bring PBJ sandwiches and eat in the school library with the grade-schoolers instead.

I went to Arbys here in Bozeman last week. I got the fish sandwich and it was great with just a little tartar sauce and cheese.

I do like fish like that, but I like vinegar-flavored rice wrapped in seaweed, too.

I’d suggest the beer battered halibut.

I could do that. Now I’m craving fish for dinner, and I took out liver!

Sushi, for me, is just bait on a plate. No thanks.

The thing I always hated most about school was Friday lunch. ALWAYS fish, & I can’t stand fish!

One of my favorite fish places growing up was Chesapeake Bay Seafood House. We also used to have Po’ Boys which had the best fried catfish, but that is also long gone. Man, I miss those places. We do still have Red Lobster for great seafood, but it is so expensive, so we can only go very occasionally.
