Ahhh… young love. I well remember those days of being dropped from a hovering beagle, into the waiting arms of my sweet babboo.

Do people feel that these strips from the late 70s are not as good as the ones from the 50s and 60s? I’ve seen “jump the shark” referenced several times over the past couple of days, so it seems that that’s the case for some (and I fully respect their opinion). Personally, though, I don’t think that Peanuts ever declined in quality – the tone of the strips from this period is unquestionably different, but different does not equal bad. Actually, my favourite thing about Schulz as a cartoonist is that he was always experimenting with new ideas, so that the strip never, ever got stale in the way that so many others did. I love the strips from 1999 just as much as I do the ones from 1950 and 1966.

He needs to be rescued again. Or he needs to be un-rescued.

[Put him back on the roof where he was “safe”.]

I’ve really not been able to get into this Snoopy helicopter rescue squad arc. Sure, all of Snoop’s fantasies from WWI flying ace to Lawyer Snoop were get-a-ble, but this, forget it. I’m just glad the squad has dropped Linus off into his lover’s arms and we can get back to comedy with reason.

It’s obvious “Peanuts” has a huge number of devoted fans. I can recommend the book “Schulz and Peanuts” by David Michaelis for those who haven’t read it already.

In 1969 I was in a hospital bed recovering from a spinal fusion. My roommate was a school janitor and the kids had sent him Peanuts books. I’d read one for a bit and have to put it down. I was afraid my laughter would interfere with my recovery.

Maybe I saw the ending to this arc when it was animated for television and blocked it out for good reason, not because someone changed stations on me. My kid brother always felt bad for Linus that Sally didn’t get the hint that he didn’t feel about her the same way, and what he had to endure for that.
