I’m old enough to remember when Cher, half Armenian, came out with the song, Half-Breed. Although I do not believe she really claimed to be part native American.
I worked with Buffy years ago and she was a delight. How many people are actually 100% sure of their ancestry after adoption? Who are these arbiters of who can be who or whom? (delete which is incorrect)
Many Americans have been told, often for generations, that they have Indian ancestry. Most take it at face value without digging into it. This is a common, often innocent mistake.
I think I’m a jump behind the plot. I remember Buffy Sainte-Marie singing “Codine” from the late 60’s or early 70’s. The line “better your pain than be caught on codine” stuck with me since then. What is the issue with her ancestry now? Why is it an issue? I thought she was a wonderful singer, but isn’t it a bit late to take issue with her career? Has she done anything in the last 40 years?
How is it that we on the left can accept a man who claims they are a woman, but reviles someone who claims a different ancestry than reality, as an imposter?
Talented yes but was it necessary to to keep reinventing your ancestry? You can champion causes without imbedding a false history and then changing the facts as you want to present them, that day. CBC is not Fox news, great pains were taken to ensure accuracy.
Many families can claim Native in their bloodline but when the DNA gets tested, they find it is actually zero. What happens is that an uncle marries a Native woman only her children would inherit the genes. So just a totally different branch of the family tree.
Perhaps we should remember that Native Americans often… obtained people (e.g., European-Americans, Hispanics, etc.) and adopted them into their society (clans, bands, groups). To point to one famous example, read about Cynthia Ann Parker. Was she a “Pretendian”?
If it’s OK for someone to identify as some other gender as others (and biological evidence) might want to assert, why is it wrong to identify as indigenous? That is as long as you aren’t collecting some kind of "compensation checks from the government. I am at least 3/4 “Viking blood”, or "stay at home Scandinavian depending on how you want to look at it. I don’t care, do you?
The news story I read did not mention a DNA test. Buffy felt called to speak (or in her case, sing) out about racial injustice. The first time I heard about the genocide of indigenous Americans, it "was listening to Buffy sing “Now That the Buffalo’s Gone” when I was a teenager. I had several of her albums, and some from Joan Baez. Maybe give her some credit for work done, considering the giant megaphone she has had since before the occupation of San Quentin?
There are a lot worse people that could be pretending to be something they aren’t. I am not indigenous but if I were, I would take it as a compliment if someone wanted to be me. Heck, Donald Trump pretends to be human and I am hoping he is outed.

I have to agree. Everything I’ve known over the years is that Buffy walked the walk. And THAT is the true test.

Iron Eyes Cody (the “Indian” with a tear in his eye) was born Espera Oscar de Corti and was 100% Italian.

Good to see a cartoonist with their finger on the pulse of vitally important current events.

I don’t care, I just enjoyed her singing.

A simple DNA test would resolve the question. My father told me I had Native ancestors but it turns out that I don’t.

Me? I’m Irish, Mi’kmaq and Antelope. Not sure of the proportions.

What next? Were the actors who played Geoduck and Crowbar not actually Native Americans? Obscure Ma and Pa Kettle reference.

If she wants to identify with First Nations people, I am fine with that either way.

I was told by my grandmother our family had no “Indian” blood. Had DNA testing as an adult and share DNA with several Southwestern tribes.
