I’m of at LEAST two minds about this. Because being admitted based on your skin color colors your own belief in your ability and that’s not a good thing. Then there’s the observable fact that whether or not YOU were admitted by something other than academic merit, folks with your skin color will be TREATED as if they were all substandard. On the other hand, some folks who would be of large benefit to society won’t get the education they need to fulfill that promise unless they get admitted “somehow” (and somewhere).
The real issue is that top tier universities are not only a very limited resource, but they’re also the most likely to give folks who need it enough scholarship money to make it through. So the “well, then go to some less prestigious school” gambit isn’t as feasible as those who use it might think.
But do bear in mind that “top tier schools” are not just good they’re also where you meet people who will be your cohort for life. For engineers, teachers… the people who are learning to do something as opposed to being somebody that cohort effect isn’t as important as it is for the folks who seem to be parasitic (they do add value, but it’s subtle): Lawyers and business types.
During the contentious hearings surrounding Clarence Thomas’s promotion to the Supreme Court, he said his enemies were trying to “lynch uppity N-words.”
Dems still prefer lynching as a means to express their feelings. Brings them back to their good old days.
But after more than 60 years of affirmative action, maybe it’s time we try something else that might work. More of the same will give us the same result.
The Republicans hate uppity people like Barack Obama and are very happy now that they can keep people like him down. Next SCOTUS will rule on whether Blacks are 3/5ths of a person or not, I imagine.
Pulling down affirmative action might prove to be the right move. Time will tell. At least, through the use of AA the colleges have seen the advantages of a diverse student body.

Sure wish someone would starting handing out functional petards for some SCROTUS members — the better to more speedily and efficiently hoist them.
The Supreme Court is doing more to guarantee Democrat victories in future elections with these decisions than anything I can think of. That Party is just going to get stronger. Look what happened when they overturned Roe.
When I first went to work for the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, my direct supervisor was a person who had worked his way up thru the educational system from teacher to principal to superintendent of schools before coming to the DPI. He mentioned to me that his proudest achievement upon being named a district administrator was cancelling the traditional 8th-grade graduation ceremony. He said that nobody should feel that their education is complete and they can leave school just because they’ve made it thru 8 grades.
Everybody needs a high-school education to be successful in today’s world, which is why every state in America guarantees that opportunity — for free! — to all its kids. Some choose not to take advantage of it, but it’s available to all. It didn’t used to be, but over the course of the 20th Century 50 different states all came to the same conclusion: it needs to be!
Have we now reached the point where society is so complex that we need to recognize that it’s time to take the next step and guarantee free post-secondary education to all as well? I think so. That would render the whole issue of racial discrimination in colleges moot.
In keeping with a nation formed affirming equality for all while keeping a significant portion in bondage and needing a bloody civil war and laws and constitutional amendments to, on paper, give minorities the same rights as the white majority.
It was never any surprise that the Un-Supreme Court would decide it the way they did. Anything that benefits regular people gets dumped on by the Supreme Criminal Court.
Lest you think SCOTUS is completely race-conscious and accepting of bribes, think of the next conservative candidate expected to be proposed when a Republican president is in a position to do so.
He is Asian, and has proven himself completely in line with the values of the other conservative justices.
I know people who are as concerned about racial justice as anyone, who have doubts about affirmative action.I happen to disagree with them. The debate should be about HOW, not WHETHER to achieve racial justice.Save our ire for those who disagree with us on WHETHER…
SCOTUS siding with religious extremists who are ‘raging against the dying of their privilege’
The Supreme Court is taking the side of an extreme, declining minority of religious fundamentalists who want to use state power to preserve the centrality they once enjoyed in public society, argued Americans United for Separation of Church and State CEO Rachel Laser on MSNBC Friday. This came after the court issued a ruling in 303 Creative v. Elenis, exempting a Colorado website designer from an anti-LGBTQ discrimination law that she hadn’t even been accused of breaking in the first place.
Justices who killed student loan forgiveness can’t even follow financial ethics law: Bush ethics lawyer
Former Bush White House ethics czar Richard Painter once coached Supreme Court Justices Samuel Alito and John Roberts on ethics ahead of their confirmation hearings. Now, he is disgusted with the state of the court whose nominees he helped advise. He appeared on MSNBC to rage against their inability to follow basic ethics, following a controversial term of decisions against a backdrop of scandal, with multiple Republican justices caught accepting luxury gifts and travel, and their families accepting paid commissions, from billionaires and interest groups with litigation before the court.
