We always preferred the scenic route. In Missouri, that meant roller coaster roads.

San Antonio to El Paso on I-10 is 551 miles-a very long drive with nothing to see-Texas upped the speed limit to 80 between Kerrville and El Paso. If you drive the speed limit the entire way you will be be driving on fumes by the time you get to El Paso

So don’t use the Interstate. That way you’ll be in the car for 3 weeks instead of 1.

When I was young, we went from New York to Nebraska on the Interstate, and I thought it was stunning. Even when it was all flat.

The maritime provinces in Canada are a good example of this. They, for the most part, have a world class highway system, but if you want to "see’ the place you need to follow the thousands of kilometers of coastline. I’ve been to Newfoundland several times. It looks like a dot on the map, and you can cross the island in a couple of days. But if you want to “see” the place, you need a month and a rental car.

Kid has it right. Adults claim front seats. Kids get back seat with views of the tops of trees and the sky. Phone can provide better views of the route than they get in the rear seat.

For me, it’s not the journey, it’s the destination. The journey is when things have the best chance to go wrong.

US- 50 from Salt Lake City, UT to Reno, NV is one stretch I simply CANNOT drive. Between the Bonneville Salt flats of eastern Utah, and the long stretch of Nevada desert, it’s just too much nothingness.

On a trip from Ohio to California, I tortured the kids with “Dad” jokes. While crossing Iowa, I would point out the window and say, “Look at that. . . Corn.” Several miles down the road I would yell, “Oh My God!! while pointing out the window. . . . More Corn.”

Do we really care whether or not the truck driver who delivers the pistachios from California to New York sees anything interesting? Of course not.

With the bizarre laws requiring booster seats for kids up to eight years old, they can see over the windows.
