If studying history does not make you uncomfortable at times (and, on balance, proud at other times), then what you’re “studying” is neither history nor study. History needs to be taught in its comprehensive entirety, from all perspectives, not just cherry-picked to be all roses and sunshine.
Imagine being so ashamed of one’s history that they need to outlaw teaching it honestly to their children.
Conservative “news” organizations are afraid to deliver the honest, complete real news (and they know they are being dishonest as revealed in the email, text and other messages they share privately among themselves).
Conservative states are afraid to teach honest, complete history (or even science, for that matter).
I guess the people who screamed obscenities and threw rocks at little Ruby Bridges in New Orleans (who was FIVE years old and trying to go to kindergarten) and the Arkansas Nine trying to integrate Little Rock’s Central High School don’t want their grandchildren to be taught that they screamed obscenities and threw rocks at little Ruby Bridges and the Arkansas Nine.
I guess the people who wrap themselves in the battle flag of the failed Confederacy — a flag that was extant for fewer than five years — don’t want their grandchildren to be taught what that flag really stood for.
Luckovich is depicting a sanitized version of a Slave market. Read “The 1619 Project”, by Nikole Hannah-Jones, to get a better idea of what went on at “real” slave markets. Then, maybe you’ll understand why the GOP want’s to cover it all up.
And just more nonsense. No one is avoiding teaching history. It’s rewriting history that’s the issue. The loon on the left really think our country was founded in 1619.
Someone REALLY needs to tell the Reich-Wingnuts that even thought you can TRY to whitewash history, and spin it to make it LOOK like whatever YOU want it to look like, you CANNOT CHANGE the FACT that it happened…and no amount of denial will change that. Of course, they won’t believe it…sad to say…
Well, teach all the history – like slaves were also in New England and Europe. The theft of lands and near genocide of the native tribes of North America, the internment of Japanese and others in WWII, the rules against the Chinese… I am all for history – but don’t cherry pick. US is not the bastion of morality that you learn in elementary school. Weltschmerz – the sadness from the difference between ideal and real – I feel that for USA – esp now with the war on women and freedom of ideas.
The fact that blacks still feel aggrieved and blame current day whites is what bothers me. All my great grandparents were born in Germany, and their kids all moved far north of the Mason/Dixon line. I know more Whites than Blacks who believe MLK was right. Colorblindness is not universally practiced by Blacks as MLK hope because it doesn’t get out the democratic minority voters.
This cartoon depicts a very sad reality. The POTENTIAL “discomfort” of some, is more important than the ACTUAL discomfort of a group that has been dealing with a reality well beyond discomfort for centuries. Now, who is the “snowflake”?
When I was in college I discovered that there had been dissent about every war in American history. But I had been taught that all wars were justified, that the USA was always right, and that God was on our side. I felt betrayed. Soon I was participating anti-war protests small and large.
My experience was that of millions. And Republican numbskulls want a repeat.
Powerful. Poor ‘woke’ person. My Grandmother taught me about the ‘Civil’ War by showing me her mother’s Bible which listed the names of her family’s generation of men-and boys- who never returned from Manassas, and Chickamauga, and Antietam, and Gettysburg. and…No, I haven’t forgotten her history lesson, as the list included her own husband.
I thought we were progressing as a country when the reality of how USA treated minorities (black, mexicans, indians etc) was taught along with the achievements of our country’s historical growth. Back in the 50’s and 60’s life in the USA was “fantastic” with no social problems. The underlying current of trouble was able to come to the forefront with education on how life was for many Americans unable to share in the “fantastic” lifestyle" of the 50’s and 60’s – leading to much needed reforms. Education really is necessary to ensure that we don’t forget and repeat these mistakes again. The first signs of a totalitarian government is to control the “facts” and the Republican’s trying to control the “wokeness” in our society is dangerous.
If I was a teacher I’d have my students write a letter to their republican congressperson explaining what REALLY makes them uncomfortable, like being gunned down by an incel with an AR-15 or having their future cancelled by Climate Catastrophe.
Powerful. Well said.My Grandmother taught me about the ‘Civil’ War by showing me her Mother’s Bible, which listed the names of all her own family’s men, who went off to fight for the right of wealthy white plantation owners to buy and sell other humans.Over half of those men never returned from Manassas, or Gettysburg, or Antietam, or The Crater, or….The list included names of her husband, and one of her sons, who had almost reached seventeen when he fell on the field at the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain, not far from their own home.
It’s bad enough to hear and read from the Holocaust deniers. Now we have those who would deny U.S. history. What’s next, those supporting the treatment of Native Americans, immigrants from non-European nations, etc.?
Interesting comments from those that do not read the news. Florida requires ALL students to learn black history. But, like most Americans, the Florida governor does not believe the US was founded on slavery in 1619 nor, like most Americans, does he believe the Revolutionary War was fought over slavery.
Reality is only about 5% of all slaves from Africa came directly to the US. A majority went to Brazil and significant numbers to the Caribbean, which did send more to the Colonies.
Slavery was wrong, but not unique to the US and it is still practiced in parts of the world today. Teaching history, including black history still occurs in Florida.
I understand the need for some cover up in the cartoon, but it needs to be reminded that at the slave markets the slaves were stood up with no clothes, poked and prodded, as they were considered objects of purchase and not humans, and rich people needed to see what they were buying.
History major here. It’s been cause for discomfort since it was oral tradition. BTW,what about PE? It has caused physical discomfort and sometimes injuries.
Back when I was a history major, I was privileged to see a draft copy of the 10 Commandments, with pencilled notations in God’s own handwriting in the margins. Seems the Big Guy was undecided until the very last moment whether to go with “Thou shalt treat women and dark-skinned people as equals.” but finally decided to devote that particular slot to the vexatious and insidious problem of graven images.
Oh one part many forget when it comes to the history of school integration; what city schools were the last to be desegregated? Answer: Boston 1972/1973.
American Indians were brought to the brink of extinction. Blacks were enslaved for centuries. Mexicans were removed. Japanese were placed in concentration camps. God forbid someone feel bad about our history. Until America is willing to look at its wounds, it will never heal.
Reflecting back on 2003 March 20: The Bush/Cheney Administration had approved the name “Operation Iraqi Liberation” for its invasion of Iraq until someone pointed out what the acronym would be, whereupon it was changed to “Operation Iraqi Freedom”.
Slavery is the easiest moral question in human history. The Bible looked it squarely in the eye on multiple occasions and got it dead wrong every single time. Why would anybody ever again trust it as a reliable guide to ethical behavior when it comes to human sexuality, the status of women, or when it’s appropriate to stone your children to death?
