Ok, so I’m the math nerd who is solving this for no reason. 10% off 3150 is 2835. For 5.5% sales tax: (2835)(1.055) = 2990.93. Amount left: 3000 – 2990.93 = 9.08. So Bob has enough with $9.08 to spare.

    10% off of 3150 is 2835. 2835 × 105.5% = 2990.93. Bob has enough.

First of all, why does Nate always think he’ll get points for this?

Second, it’s $3,150 × 0.9 = $2,835, then $2,835 plus 5.5% of $2,835, which comes out to about $2,990.92. So the answer is yes, but he’ll have pretty much no money left.

Ironically enough, $3000 actually is a cheap ring. Apparently the average amount people spend on engagement rings is $5000 – $7000

There isn’t actually enough information given to solve this problem. You also need to know how greedy the state/county/municipality is. The issue:

    $3150 * .90 * 1.055 = $2990.925

So the tax could be rounded up, or down, or even way up.So Bob is going to wind up with a ring, nine dollars, and (probably) seven, eight, or maybe six cents.

Actually, it could be uncertain even if it were 5% sales tax, as it could be split between multiple government who all want their piece rounded up.

It depends on the assumptions. If the taxing authority insists on taxing the fair market value of $3150, the sales tax would be 5.5% of $3150, or $173.25. 90% of $3150 is $2835. He would need $2835 + 173.25 to purchase the ring in that case, or $3008.25. Unless he can haggle with the store, or come up with alternate financing, he doesn’t get the ring (stupid taxes!)

10% of 3,150=315, 3,150-315=2,835, + 5.5% sales tax, so the answer is about $2,990.92 cents, so yea, its enough, but he will not really have much money afterwards

In case anyone cares, Bob’s going to have around $9.07 left. Which results in the ring being the cost of $2990.93

Imma say it. 10/10. This is Big Nate at its best. Nate’s logic is true and you see where he’s coming from, but also he’s just not answering the question.

10/10 Love it when Nate shows he’s not an idiot, just thinks differently.
