A shocking revelation! No wonder Thorin hasn’t said much about what happened when they abandoned the Moon.
This does open up the possibility that the “chosen ones” heading into deep space may have come across Sail and Ghote in Diet Smith’s last Space Coupe. I’m hoping that doesn’t mean that Sail and Ghote will eventually return, but it seems that the die has been cast. Their return would shake up the story and I don’t like the idea of it.
I guess the people who lost in the lottery were forced to move to Earth against their wishes? I suspect that they are in better shape than the ones who headed into deep space and were never heard from again. I wonder how long the supplies would have lasted for the “chosen ones.”
I can’t imagine the ones coming here, to a certain living post Moon life being losers than the ones going into an uncertain future. Long live Ghote and Sail !
I remember this from Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy! Where all the ‘important’ people were sent off ahead of the rest to escape some sort of unnamed disaster.
Deep space, i.e. outside our solar system. Traveling at the speed of light the nearest star is 4.24 light years away (traveling at the speed of light it would take 4.24 years to get there). There has been no indication the space coupes could travel that fast, could they reasonably have expected to hear for the colonists in the few years since they left (although the lapse of time within the strip is wonky)? If they were traveling at ten thousand miles a second it would take 80 years to reach the nearest star.
Mike’s filling us in with a lot of details. I imagine these will pull together into the story. Looks like he’s setting up motive here for some the Lunarians stuck on Earth to be considering conquering the earthlings.
Though, they needn’t all be stuck on Earth. They have some space coupes with them.
1-DT: You do know that if you conquer the USA, you’ll have to start paying taxes, don’t you. THORIN:Sigh Yes and that’s why…
2-…we funded a bunch of political campaigns of people who would pass laws that would forbid the taxing of illegal aliens. Those laws didn’t pass for some reason so…
3-…a lot of our people beat feet for worlds where politicians could not only be bought but who could also get our demands made into law.
DT: HANG ON. That wall along our southern border…
THORIN: Yes. Built to keep us from coming north from Antarctica. We still haven’t figured out how to defeat it.
They’re all as dead as the villains that stole the space coupe in the story a few years back! Those craft aren’t set up to support lives on long deep space missions. They have one small chamber in them.
And the 8 SPACE COUPES escaped into space just as Krypton exploded.Jonathan and Martha Kent only have a 2-bedroom house,so they couldn’t take in any Mon People
“The chosen ones set off into deep space to find a new home, we haven’t heard from them since”. Hmm…this revelation and my trip to a store yesterday for stationery paper and finding none tells me, people don’t write letters anymore.
I’m relieved that the Moon Governor doesn’t have as many people under his command as I thought he did.“A time of loss”.Boy that’s a great way to sugarcoat it.
Eight Space Coupes depart for the Deep. After years of not hearing from them, The Chosen Ones (some of them, anyway) return to the Moon and then on to New Moon Valley, totally upsetting the balance of power. In a shocking turn of events, some of them have decided that the idea of living on Earth is not so bad after all. But there are those pesky Humans to be dealt with.
Scientific advisors to The Chosen Ones are Drs. Ghote and Sail, whom they spotted and rescued on their voyage back to Earth.
The fortunes of the Cabal xenophobes could be on the rise….

that could either be “out of range” or “something bad has happened…” I’m sure there is a third option somewhere.

Space coupes have no airlocks. How are they planning to test the atmosphere of a possible destination?
Yes, yes, I know that just about every aspect of Gould’s space coupe stories falls apart if probed with even a whisker of logic.

We, of course, have to ignore the fact that Earth radar or telescopes picked up none of this.
