Since the insurrection, 717 corporations and industry groups have funneled over $18 million to the re-election of members of Congress who objected to the 2020 presidential election results. As calls for insurrection accountability reach the one year mark, one thing is for certain: our democracy cannot recover from the insurrection while Corporate America continues to spend millions of dollars bankrolling seditionist members of Congress.

Then there are plenty of specifics:

Boeing ($346,500), Koch Industries ($308,000), American Crystal Sugar ($285,000), General Dynamics ($233,500) and Valero Energy ($207,500) are the top corporate donors to those who objected to the election and their party committees. Some companies resumed giving almost immediately. Toyota, which called the January 6 attack “horrific” and promised to reevaluate its giving criteria, poured $9,000 into the pockets of 9 Sedition Caucus members within a month of the riot. Cigna and AT&T also resumed giving to seditionists within two months of the riot. After the attack, corporations rushed to pay lip service to democracy. Companies including Aflac, Ford Motors, and Valero Energy pledged to pause donations and re-evaluate their giving criteria, but these performative statements would soon give way to business as usual. These three companies have contributed more than $300,000 to seditionists, including lawmakers who sit on committees with power over the companies’ business interests.

‘This is the rise of fascism’: Steve Bannon squares off against Michelle Obama’s voter drive

Conservative podcast host Steve Bannon sarcastically bragged on Monday that his effort to take over the entire election apparatus of the United States was a “rise of fascism.”

During his War Room broadcast, Bannon suggested that former First Lady Michelle Obama had recently announced a voter drive in response to his plot to control elections.

Bannon pointed to a New York Times op-ed by Ezra Klein that said his so-called “precinct strategy” is working.

“Whether it’s the school boards, whether it’s the election officials, the precinct strategy is to take over the Republican Party,” Bannon explained on his Monday podcast. “Remember, there are no coincidences. Michelle Obama who has floated above this thing at 60,000 feet with Barack Obama, floating above it because they’re national heroes, according to some people, over the weekend, what did she say she was going to do?”

Criminal Trump pardoned Bannon of his felonies so he could continue to subvert the USA in the name of the Republican party.

Jan. 6 panel rips Jim Jordan: ‘Trump team persuaded him to hide’

“Mr. Jordan has previously said that he would cooperate with the committee’s investigation,” the committee said in response, “but it now appears that the Trump team has persuaded him to try to hide the facts and circumstances of January 6th.”

Jordan, who was among 147 Republicans who voted against certification of Joe Biden’s election win, declined a Dec. 22 request to appear before the panel to discuss his communications with Trump on the day of the attack.

Noam Chomsky: ‘Proto-fascism’ and ’white nationalism are prime ingredients of the GOP’s slow-motion coup

When Polychroniou asked Chomsky “how should we understand what happened on January 6, 2021,” he responded, “Participants in the assault on the Capitol doubtless had varying perceptions and motives, but were united in the effort to overthrow an elected government — in short, an attempted coup by definition. It was furthermore an attempt that could have succeeded if a few prominent Republican figures had changed their stance and gone along with the coup attempt, and if the military command had made different decisions. (President Donald) Trump was making every effort to facilitate the coup, which would surely have been applauded by a large majority of Republican voters and by the Republican political leadership, which, with a few exceptions, grovels at his feet in a shameful display of cowardice.”

Chomsky continued, “Implications for the future are all too clear. The Republican organization — it’s hard to regard them any longer as an authentic political party — is now carefully laying the groundwork for success next time, whatever the electoral outcome may be. It’s all completely in the open, not only not concealed, but in fact, heralded with pride by its leaders. And regularly reported, so that no one who is interested enough to pay attention to the American political scene can miss it. To mention just the most recent discussion I’ve seen, the Associated Press describes how the GOP is carrying out a ‘slow-motion insurrection’ and has become ‘an anti-democratic force’ — something that has not happened before in American politics.”

The author told Polychroniou, “Even the tattered system that still survives is intolerable to GOP wreckers…. In the not-too-distant background are calls to ‘save our country’ by force if necessary, where ‘our country’ is a white supremacist Christian nationalist patriarchal society in which non-white folk can take part as long as they ‘know their place’ — not at the table. (white people’s) fear of ‘losing our country’ is (in part a response to) demographic tendencies that are eroding white majorities, resisting even the radical gerrymandering that is imposed to amplify the structural advantages of the scattered conservative rural vote. Another threat to ‘our country’ is that white supremacy is increasingly rejected, particularly by younger people, as is devotion to religious authority, even church membership.”

Chomsky warns that a fascist government in the U.S. would make climate change even more dangerous, as the MAGA movement doesn’t consider climate change a threat.

“When Hungary, the current darling of the right, descends towards fascism, it’s bad enough,” Chomsky told Polychroniou. “If the U.S. does, long-term survival of human society is a dim prospect…. The limited political democracy that still exists is hanging by a delicate thread.”

“Election subversion is not merely a threat (in the United States) — it’s happening in the ‘soft coup’ that is underway right now,” Chomsky told Polychroniou. “As is the drift toward a form of fascism. There is evidence that general attitudes of Trump voters on a range of issues are similar to those of European voters for far-right parties with fascist origins, and these sectors are now a driving force in the GOP. There’s also substantial evidence that this drift to the far right may be driven in part by blind loyalty to Trump.”

Jan. 6 committee turns up forged documents declaring Trump the election winner in pivotal states: report

Lawmakers investigating the Jan. 6 insurrection have obtained thousands of records from state officials — including forged certificates declaring him the winner in both Arizona and Michigan — and interviewed numerous witnesses, including the Democratic secretaries of state in each of those states, reported Politico.

“They mostly discussed election administration in Arizona, the 2020 elections, threats/harassment directed toward the office, and the Cyber Ninja’s partisan ballot review,” said a spokesperson for Arizona secretary of state Katie Hobbs.

“By affixing the state seal to documents containing false and misleading information about the results of Arizona’s November 3, 2020 General Election, you undermine the confidence in our democratic institutions,” Hobbs wrote to one of the pro-Trump groups.

I remember back in the 2016 Republican primaries race, conservative pundit David Brooks opined that “Cruz’s IQ is probably 30 points higher than Trump’s.” I immediately thought to myself: “You mean Cruz’s IQ is ONLY an even bleedin’ hundred?” But of course, Cruz is smarter than average—but in ways that remind me of an autistic savant. Because his intellect is INCREDIBLY limited. His lack of knowledge of science, the arts, and history is always pretty apparent. (I’m leaving out that fact that he is, like Traitor Trump, a congenital liar.) Like the hedgehog, he is good at exactly one thing: in his case, taking bribes from corporations in order to betray his constituents.

That’s the state of the Republican Party. It’s worse to tell the truth than anything else. Destroying Democracy? Nope, that’s their goal. Killing tens of thousands of people by convincing them to skip vaccines? Nope, that ensures they win in 22 and 24. Again, you’re supporting a party that thinks telling the truth is the worst thing you can do. What a bunch of morons you are to vote for them.

Jamie Raskin throws Jim Jordan’s words from Benghazi back in his face for Jan. 6 investigation

“To answer Jim Jordan, I would quote Jim Jordan from the views that he expressed in the final Benghazi report, where he said that all of the truth must come out,” said Raskin. “Everybody needs to testify, and nobody’s got the right to hide anything from Congress. So, I think he had it right then. Jim Jordan, more than anybody else, knows what dogged, aggressive investigation is about, even when he’s on a wild goose chase, he demands all the information he wants, and we’re not on that. We are on the central investigative mission certainly of this decade, if not this century, to get to the bottom of this terrible political crime that was incited and to a substantial extent organized by Donald Trump.”

“Article I of the Constitution gives each House of Congress the right to set the rules of its own proceedings. We are also — have disciplinary power over members, including the power of censure, admonishment, all the way to expulsion from the body and the speech and debate clause says members of Congress should not be questioned for their legislative work and judgments outside of congress, clearly implying they can be questioned inside of Congress. And, of course, that’s a habitual occurrence with the Ethics Committee where we call people all the time so there’s nothing remotely extraordinary about the idea that we can call and demand the presence of members.”

Swing State Trumpers Forged Letters to National Archives in Harebrained Scheme to Overturn ElectionThe groups sent fake certificates of ascertainment declaring Trump the winner

Swing State Trumpers Forged Letters to National Archives in Harebrained Scheme to Overturn ElectionSwing State Trumpers Forged Letters to National Archives in Harebrained Scheme to Overturn ElectionFormer President Trump speaks at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), on Sunday, July 11, 2021, in Dallas.

Pro-Trump groups in Arizona and Michigan attempted to fool the National Archives by sending forged certificates of ascertainment declaring Trump the recipient of the state’s 2020 electors. The Jan. 6 committee now has those fake certificates, thanks to the secretaries of State for both swing states, Politico reported on Monday.

The National Archives shared the forged documents with state officials, informing them it would not accept the fakes. Representatives for the officials declined to comment on the documents to Politico, but they confirmed that Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson and Arizona Secretary of State Katie Hobbs and their staff met with the Jan. 6 committee this past November.

“They mostly discussed election administration in Arizona, the 2020 elections, threats/harassment directed toward the office, and the Cyber Ninja’s partisan ballot review,” a spokesperson for Hobbs told Politico, while a representative for Benson said the secretary of State discussed the election as well as the days before Jan. 6.

he forged documents sent in the wake of the election, which were obtained through a public records request, purport to show all of both state’s electors, 16 in Michigan and 11 in Arizona, casting their votes for Trump and Pence.
