The same thing that happens when you travel to time before time machines were invented.

A time before pine tree air fresheners were invented? It stinks.

This opens up a range of questions. Does the time machine create a bubble to protect itself and its contents from the effects of time? If it does, will that still be in effect when the machine stops at a date-time? If it does, will it still be in effect when the door of the time machine is opened?

On the other hand, if the time machine does not create a protective bubble, it will not be able to travel back to before the activation or forward past the disablement of that individual machine. Furthermore the contents and occupants will likely change in age as the machine travels, making the whole effort mostly pointless.

How do we know that hasn’t already happened, and that’s how pine tree air fresheners were thought of in the first place!?

Those air fresheners are pretty small. I’m sure you can fit a couple dozen in there that will last until you come back.
