A female friend worked with a female co-worker. When they both completed a difficult task, the co-worker gave my friend a high-five and said: “We’re real studs!”
And do you know where the term “joy stick” comes from? The original joy stick was the handle of the control rod on very early airplanes that stuck up between the pilot’s legs. Although Wikipedia gives a different description of the name source, the allusion is unmistakable.
“Jockstrap” came into use in the 19th century from “jock”, a long-used slang word for penis, Jock being used for Jack and John and adapted rather like the British “John Thomas” for penis. Jock was a sort of everyman, and since every man had one, jock was a natural. So it’s rather the reverse of the usual way terms evolve, since “jock”, derived from “jockstrap” didn’t arise until the mid 20th century. So it’s essentially calling an athlete a d**k.
Not to be outdone, females now have the jillstrap, or pelvic protector.
Words evolve over time as the needs of societies change, eventually making their origins irrelevant except as a matter of academic interest. If Holly’s generation is making that word more inclusive, they should be encouraged to do so; convincing them that certain words are distasteful merely becauze of their origins will, if anything, hold back the development of the language and the culture.
That is why Holly loves basketball. For me my mom was not in sports, in her young days small school room she never played. For me I tried basketball never could shoot hoops so stopped. I am not like mamma Stone.

Hmm. I think the female equivalent is a jog bra. And cannot recall ever hearing a female athlete called anything resembling that.

OK, call her a thong. That covers about as much as a jock strap.

Instead of “Eeu” she might have said “aw, nuts.”
I was never an athlete; I was more of an athletic supporter. (cue rimshot)

Jock comes from the word “jockey”, who is someone who races horses. What’s wrong with horse racing?
