This is why I will be quaffing root beers (Barq’s) on the job today answering phones for a certain Fed program. For the boys…and the girls (about forgot what century I was in…not ready to be canceled yet. That day approaches…)
Always remember that on the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month the killing stopped in 1918. And remember all those in wars and conflicts that have happen since then too.
Always thought it was really cool that Schulz honored Bill Mauldin regularly on Veteran’s Day. His cartoons were amazing. Just read that Mauldin admired George Patton but he thought he was “insane” and “living in the Dark Ages”
A nice Veteran’s Day break from the Peppermint Patty skating arc…and thank you to all the Veterans that have served in whatever branch of the service you served in!
This dog has a great imagination. Remember our veterans today. Thank you for your service. I always give my Viet Nam vet a special dinner. He hardly ever talks about his time in Viet Nam, but he does talk about his time in Hawaii.
From 1969 to 1998, cartoonist Charles M. Schulz (himself a veteran of World War II) regularly paid tribute to Bill Mauldin in his Peanuts comic strip on Veterans Day. In the strips, Snoopy, dressed as an army vet, would annually go to Mauldin’s house to “quaff a few root beers and tell war stories.” By the end of the strip Schulz had depicted 17 of Snoopy’s visits.
Patton was aware of Bill Mauldin from all of the cartoons in which he was lambasted. At one time he was quoted as saying,’ If that son of a b*i*t*c*h ever sets foot in 3rd Army, I’ll throw his a$$ in jail."
The older generation still called it Armistice Day when I was a kid. Everybody would buy a poppy and wear it on their lapel in remembrance of those lost on Flanders Field. Google the poem “In Flanders Field” by John McCrae to learn why.
My father, a Korean War Veteran passed away this year. While starting the process to clean out his house and garage, we came across what looks like a first edition of Bill Mauldin’s war-time humor book. I’m looking forward to reading it. Thank you, dad, for everything. You are missed very much.
A salute to all our veterans and to Charles Schulz for always remembering and honoring those who gave and who sacrificed so much to preserve, protect, and defend our republic.
Instead of “Thanking a veteran” for all they have done, I think that non-veterans should buy them supper or give them free beer or cable for life or something useful no matter what time of the year it is to show our true appreciation. We can say “Thank you” any time, but do you really mean it? To show real appreciation, we should give them something worthwhile to show our appreciation because serving in the armed forces no matter what branch takes a lot!!!

Peanuts Veteran’s Day 11/11/1998 last time Mauldin drew Willie and Joe for publication. Schultz and Mauldin both signed it.

Schulz once wrote that his most precious possession was his Combat Infantry Badge. He was proud, very proud of his service with the 20th Armored.
