What it’s bad to go in debt for: Something that doesn’t return more value than it costs. Or, to be sure, something that’s UNLIKELY to return that value.
What’s GOOD to go in debt for: Something that will return more than the cost. For instance, it’s fine to buy a home on credit, as long as the future value is less than the total amount borrowed.
Things get weird, though, when the entity going into debt is a government. What IS return on investment in that case? My take is that the government gets a return when the amount of taxes goes up (because of what they spent it on). That being the case, if some of the citizens get a better education → better paying job → more taxes paid, then the debt was a good one. Ol Al, though, can’t get past the GQP operating instructions: If the DEMS spend money that’s BAD…
The revolutionary (and I do not use that word lightly) infrastructure upgrades (not just improvements) have a chance to pay for themselves, unlike the Trump/McConnell tax cuts
Al understands that the GOP debt is really for acquiring assets for the wealthy so that it can benefit everyone — when it showers down — using always reliable gut feelings, while the godless, immoral, [disloyal to their own] Democratic budgets are based on long-term positive ROI figures validated by the unbiased apolitical CBO assessments [how can CBO be trusted if not controlled by GOP?].
America is crumbling in more ways than one! Grids, bridges, highways, etc are on their last leg. Other countries don’t have this problem…their roads and etc, are kept up! Unlike America! To politicians they do everything else but….stupid money wasting projects like building a useless wall! I am elated it passed! Now, GET TO WORK!
The kids of today will benefit most from the infrastructure improvements. They’ll certainly benefit more from them than they will from Republican tax cuts for the wealthy. (Unless, like Rockefeller, the rich start handing out dimes to little kids in an effort to appear less porcine).
the need for traditional infrastructure I believe is hyped up . . and already has ongoing funds. . ..and no one I know needs a job . . .some democrats are stuck in nostalgia for the ‘new deal’ (shown even by the name green new deal)
but some of the stuff in the green side is new and likely needed though probably less dollars needed than congress came up with
Give Al a break, guys. He’s obligated to argue that government under the former guy was superior in all facets to government under Biden. The facts make that damned hard to do.
The $3.5T human infrastructure portion follows “an old Chinese saying.” If you are planning for one year; plant rice. If you are planning for 100 years; plant trees. If you are planning for 1000 years; build schools.
As long as the debt is incurred supporting tax breaks and other gifts to their wealthy donors the Republicans don’t care about debt, but the moment there is an effort to ‘promote the general welfare’ etc. they wail and gnash their teeth about ‘saddling our grandchildren with debt’.
Hope there’s a big pile of cash in there for rebuilding environmental infrastructure.
A balanced budget wont save us from extinction.
It seems every week there’s a scary new report about how man-made climate change is going to cause the collapse of the world’s ice sheets, result in the extinction of up to 1 million animal species and — if that wasn’t bad enough — make our beer very, very expensive.
Of course, if Trump had ever released an “Infrastructure Week” the alt-rights would cheer it as a triumph and wouldn’t bother to look at what it cost and how it would be paid for…
Republicans grew the debt over the last four years thanks to their drastic cuts to federal tax revenue and increased defense industry spending. Conservative slugs can suck it with their hypocrisy. We need to reverse the damage of decades of trickle down economics tax cuts that has hurt working class Americans more than anything. If only we all can be like the wealthy that claim their wealth isn’t income but a tax exempt investment perk.

Qultservatives think of economics as a game of musical chairs.
Don’t give a hoot about money until the music stops and there’s a Democrat in the white house.
Never mind the fact that US infrastructure is WAY OVERDUE for a massive overhaul which does require spending.

Ever notice when there’s a Democrat in the Oval, the GQP cares about the debt&deficit like there’s no tomorrow?!! FUNNY THAT!!

Too bad that in Al’s universe, they can’t tell the difference in investing in the country and $Trillion giveaways to billionaires and corporations.

What monster does your cartoon for debt financed tax cuts to the top 1% look like? Or is the infrastructure bill only bad because it helps all people?
