“Republican legislators in Oklahoma and Iowa have passed bills granting immunity to drivers whose vehicles strike and injure protesters in public streets.” — New York Times
Isis terrorist tactics made legal by the GOP? What’s next? Voter suppression? ..done that… Mask-free states during a pandemic? ..done that… Public executions? … hmmm, the Jan 6th gallows came pretty close…. How far will they go?
And the day after Brown v. Brown all the white people saw the errors of their ways, and everything was fixed, and nothing else needed to be done……………………..right?
Shouldn’t there be a sign twirler advertising how you can save up to $800 by switching to the new Republikkkan auto insurance policy ? (Not available in all states)
It truly is horrible what Repubs are doing to our nation. They used to be just anti-big-government but now they seem to be anti-democratic process. And if vehicular homicide during a peaceful protest is legal, then what’s to stop the otherwise peaceful protesters from using their vehicles to make a statement during a MAGA gathering. And, is the use of a vehicle an act of peaceful protest? THIS HAS TO STOP. DEMS NEED TO TAKE BACK THE STATE LEGISLATURES AND GOVERNORSHIPS.
Seems like a fair law, not everyone qualifies to buy a AR-14 or want to carry one around. In a nice comfortable vehicle with air conditioning and beefed up sound system is the way for those with mobility issues to enjoy a rally/riot.
Next up: the Republican-packed Supreme Court has agreed to review a century-old New York state law about carrying firearms outside the home. A law that was upheld by previous SC rulings.
I learned something new today, had not heard of this. It is a problem however. Why should protesters have the rights to put the drivers of a vehicle in danger by stepping in front of moving vehicles, blocking interstates and such. It is clear most of the commenters here only see one side of the problem (and I agree there is a problem) but don’t want to deal with the larger picture. The articles I read on this imply the intent is to protect drivers who feel endangered and not the extreme presented here, however I think Clay Jones is doing us a great service in showing how this new direction could be abused.
The problem with this law, and all the new voter suppression laws, is not so iFmuch how they are written (which sounds more or less reasonable, if unnecessary), but how they will be ENFORCED. If some Proud Boi says he feared for his life and had to run people down, that will be just fine. If there’s only one place to vote in your (largely populated by people of color) precinct and the lines are two days long, that will be just fine. If you’re a person of color standing on the sidewalk holding a protest sign, you will be arrested for being a rioter.
There aren’t enough Baseball All-star Games to go around, but plenty of other sports and events (and corporate locations/re-locations) could be pulled from states which pass insane laws. That’s IF there are enough SPINES to go around!
@ImaginaryFriend: The ‘protesters’ are not “…stepping in front of moving vehicles” on Interstates, but marching or standing on roads, streets, etc., exercising Constitutionally guaranteed rights of 1ST Amendment protest/petition of grievance. They can now legally be assaulted with 2 ton (or larger) deadly weapons in violation of said rights, per these state’s Legislatures. You may as well advocate that they be allowed to be SHOT, on public or private property without consequence. Your ‘Straw-Man’ argument is noted. Hope you’ll be VERY CAREFUL while crossing any right-of-way in these States – you might be assaulted by someone who does not respect YOUR ‘pedestrian’ status, exercising your protest rights, or not – would YOU be justified, as an ‘armed citizen’, in repelling such an ‘attack’ by killing the attacker – “Stand Your Ground”? IANAL, but doubt the Constitutionality of such ‘Laws’.
The US is becoming known for its highly emotional, thought-free, legislation and its irrational fear of demographic changes in its population. The complacency of the US majority is embarrassing in that no action — just rhetoric is being used — in defending our constitutional quasi-democratic republic from radical, unstable, extremists that have plagued the Democratic party, for a long time, and are now disgracing/demoralizing the Republican party.
The original purpose of these bills is to protect people who are swarmed by protesters and are forced to gun the engine in their own defense.
This became an issue last year after what happened in Provo, Utah. Someone failed to properly block off an intersection, and so an elderly driver turned onto what should have been a closed road. They were soon surrounded by BLM protesters, one of whom shot at the driver.
If republicans run over a crossing guard and some minority children will they then claim they were protesters? Will Fox news link the victims to BLM or Antifa
