I once woke up in the midst of the night to find a monster under my bed… And that was surely the last time I drank so much that I fell out of and rolled underneath it.
When Mom comes running to Calvin, she’ll find no sign of any monsters under the bed. She’ll also see Hobbes as a stuffed tiger but she sometimes talks to Hobbes when they are alone and Hobbes seems to remember their conversations.
I’ve just had a look at the strip from exactly two weeks ago May 23. The throwaway joke at the beginning is similar to the story arc of this past week. It begins with Susie greeting Calvin with an insult and Calvin insulting her back. He then turns towards us and says “It’s shameless, the way we flirt.”
Like the story arc from the past week, it reminds us that the early Susie was more provocative than she would later be. It also shows the love-hate feelings that Susie and Calvin have towards one another.
I mentioned on Friday that Bill Watterson has described Calvin’s feelings for Susie as “a mild crush” and someone later asked where I had read that. Watterson uses this term in his description of Susie and her relationship with Calvin in his introduction to Susie in The Calvin and Hobbes Tenth Anniversary Book.
I have to admit I never worried about monsters under my bed, but I DO remember at least 2 or 3 times as a teen when I dreamed that ants were swarming under the covers…every time I’d leap out of bed, flip on the light and yank the bedspread and top sheet back expecting to see dozens (hundreds?) of red ants. Glad THAT passed fairly quickly.

Is Maurice’s last name Sendak? It would explain why he blew your cover. He doesn’t want to be a bad monster.

If there’s THAT many monsters under there, we could’ve at least seen a claw or a tail, but these guys managed to fit REAL tight.

I bet hitting them with the baseball bats makes them smarter at this point.

I thought if you give the monsters names they will be less scary.
