Forty years of anti-union propaganda has effectively poisoned the minds of a generation and a half, to the point where they vote against their own interests.
I order a lot of things from Amazon but I do wish all that money Amazon takes in would trickle down more to their employees. The delivery people that drop off my purchases have been very nice and polite and deserve raises.
I’ve been on both sides, worker and management in the same company. We’d go on strike every two years and end up with what the management offered in the first place after losing two weeks wages. Just the threat of a union usually causes wages to raise to keep them out. In the small company I last worked for there was no union and no way to get issues addressed. I worked on commission and they could arbitrarily make changes to the pay schedule which couldn’t have happened with unions. The thing is a lot of people like the advantages but no one wants to pay union dues.
Why is it people categorically deny any and all benefits of bargaining which has brought us about almost all of the laws and regulations that make working better and safer? Putting the same blinders and propaganda into that context is like saying “baseball” and have a some people think of a nice day at the ballpark with a hotdog, peanuts, and a beer while others can only limit their thinking to bench clearing brawls, bean balls, and fans beating an opposing teams’ fan with sticks and fists.
We couldn’t have a union at the school where I worked for years. Too many educated people pooh-poohed the idea of unions. I’d try to explain the history of unions and how they improved the worker’s life. After I’d finish, they’d reply, see! don’t need them anymore. It’s like democracy. Have to constantly fight for our rights as citizens and as employees.
“The reason we have minimum wage is because if I could pay you less, I would.” Every time the minimum wage is raised, they are still making minimum wage.
I worked several years in a non-union sawmill. My wages and benefits weren’t high because the work was dangerous or hard. My wages and benefits reflected those at the nearby union sawmills. Where I worked had to pay better and provide benefits in hoping to keep workers from going to the union mills. That is true trickle down economics. Owners and managers have to pay more in order to make a profit for themselves; even if the wealthy owners paid NO taxes(part and parcel of voodoo economics), they never voluntarily give up money to workers.
This for the evangelical ‘Christians’ who love to quote old testament at the rest of us: Don’t abuse a laborer who is destitute and needy, whether he is a fellow Israelite or foreigner living in your land and in your city. Pay him at the end of each workday; he’s living from hand to mouth and needs it now. If you hold back his pay, he’ll protest to God and you’ll have sin on your books. Deuteronomy 24:15 way before Jesus baby!
Those of us who criticize so-called southern culture as fundamentally dim-witted, ignorant, and gullible may indeed be uncharitable in doing so; however, when southerners routinely vote against their own best interests and do so out of stupidity, i.e., dim-wittedness, ignorance, and gullibility, our criticism of so-called southern culture becomes less harsh and more insightful.

The Amazon “smile” is diabolically sneering. Clay, did you use Louis De Joy as a model?

With the pay and bennies at Amazon, the only thig a union would give is paying union dues to crooks.

I don’t know if anti-union propaganda killed the vote, subtle company comments might have contributed to its demise!
