Martin Luther King suggested that we need to make good / necessary trouble.

I’d like to point out, just in passing, that long lines to vote could be easily prevented, but the GA folks want long lines for some voter groups.

It is unbelievable (or should be) that repubs are stooping to this level. It is pretty obvious that they want to return to pre-1964. They need to think about what God and future generations will think of them.

Other than the intimidation value of having police watch voters standing in line to be sure the voters don’t receive water or food from some passing stranger or family member, I am at a complete loss in understanding this law. In fact, I am at a complete loss in understanding that someone even thought this up.

Please wait for the Bull Conner Act, where they get to turn on the fire hoses on voters at predominately black polls.

Along with the water there is a need for job johnnies at regular intervals where extremely long lines are likely.

Republicans will see to it that the lines are long enough to cause hunger and thirst problems. In Blue districts, of course.

The biggest problem is why are they having to wait in line so long that they need water? Surely that is an easier problem to solve if you care about fair elections…

Unless you also provide bathrooms, giving water to people stuck in lines for hours isn’t such a mercy. ;)

All kidding aside, Congress needs to exercise their power under Article I, Section 4, Clause 1 to change State election laws that interfere with the right to vote.

About time they made those voting lines the somber event they should be. While they are banning the “refreshments” they should have gone the extra mile. Like in days of old when truly dedicated souls would crawl in sackcloth to show their faith.. the least Georgia should do is take away their aids to comfort.. like no parasols/umbrellas; wheelchairs/walkers; hats/coats or boots. Heck I would even enforce a minimum stand in line time like 4~5 hours. /S

OK it seems an odd thing to prohibit for sure, but what stops people taking a backpack with water and sandwiches with them anyway, I mean that’s not going to be illegal is it? I can see the reason people think its a bad law, but it seems very easy to undermine in a legal manner. Only commenting on this particular aspect mind you.

By carrying a backpack they will be subject to search and seizure for anything on or in their backpack or body. Just so you know, before they put their knee on your throat.

Regarding this specific aspect of the new law, the media is cherry-picking and distorting things, as usual. The law doesn’t ban food and water or it being provided. I can’t show up and walk up and down the line all day handing out bottled water (maybe with a label saying VOTE FOR ME! – Yeah this has happened and many places have laws prohibiting it) and packages of cookies. Hwever, poll workers can provide water. Here’s a line form the law most people haven’t seen or heard reported:

“This Code section shall not be construed to prohibit a poll officer from … making available self-service water from an unattended receptacle to an elector waiting in line to vote,”

Self service water stations can be placed at the proper distance from the polls and lines so people can grab whatever before getting in line by anyone. What they can’t do is have a person or sign there saying this water station is brought to you by Harvey Schmidlap, candidate for County Dog Catcher. And of course, they can always bring their own.

Only a complete imbecile would think that giving water to people who are forced to stand in line for a long time (because of the quite deliberate policy of having very few places to vote in minority precincts—in other words, to suppress the vote and betray the notion of “one person one vote”—in other words, to betray our nation’s ideals) is “bribery.” Is the handing out of campaign flyers to voters on their way in to vote also “bribery”? I, like most voters, toss ‘em in the trash as soon as possible. I mean, if a voter hasn’t made up his mind when he goes to his polling place, and could be swayed by a last-minute campaign flyer, I’d rather he didn’t vote in the first place. (Then again, I’d rather that the two criminals on the Supreme Court didn’t vote in the first place……..)

If you are getting long voting lines and waits, wouldn’t that make you think that you need more capacity at voting places as well as more voting places? Instead, Republicans want to make voting as painful as possible…

Fascist republicans would deny water to a thirsty person.

Anti democracy Republicans want thirsty people to drop out of line so they won’t vote.

Vicious lying racist republicans are afraid of the American people.

Vote first, then hand out water and jam up the jails. It worked in the bad old days, which Georgia is trying to bring back.

I’m just waiting for some sweet little old white lady to collapse while waiting on line in the hot sun and have all the EMTs placed in cuffs for coming to her aid. According to Georgia law, the responsible thing to do would be to let her lie there until the election’s over. It would be something like poetic justice if she were the governor’s grandma.

@MontanaBill &/or apropos of nothing (as they are the same), Montana had about 2,000 more deaths than live births in 2020 — the first time that’s happened since 1908. That’s a 14% increase. Amazing what a pandemic will do to a state.

    NB: This is provisional data.

Simple solution… next election, HAND OUT WATER. If a police officer tells you that it is against the law, tell him to arrest you. THEN, demand a full jury trial within 30 days. Let that happen about 3000, 4000 times across the entire state, and watch the Georgia court system grind to a total halt. Not to mention what the extra costs will do the state budget. AND, best of all, it’s totally legal AND CALLED FOR BY THE LAW!!

This needs to be challenged in court. Civil disobedience is what is needed here. When Apostle Paul wrote about obeying governmental authority- well, he probably never met a Dixiecrat or a modern (Trumper) Republican.

Passive Electioneering, look it up. Already laws against it in almost every state, blue and red. Nothing new. Only the faux outrage for attention sake. You’re not a victim simply because you want to be.

    1) If someone collapses from dehydration, will the EMTs who come to help be arrested?

    2) Potential loophole?: What if a person leaves the line, gets food or water some distance away, but is then allowed to “cut in line” by those who were before and after them before they left?
