Gary Varvel for March 24, 2021

Since O’Connor v. Donaldson in 1975, mass shootings have seemingly grown exponentially.

Oh, come on Varvel, you don’t give a snit. You love the guns more than the victims. You support the rite (sic) for people to own weapons that can kill dozens in minutes.

The Colorado GOP and NRA managed to scuttle the assault weapons ban (and bragged about it) ten days prior to Boulder which allowed another mentally ill individual to buy assault weapons.

    Good job repugs.

Thoughts and Prayers haven’t worked. They won’t work, either, until people start acting on those thoughts and prayers. Sometimes you have to roll up your sleeves and work to make a miracle happen. You have to be God’s instrument.

As for the people obstructing the good works? Ask yourself, “Who do they serve?” News flash, it isn’t who they say it is.

F your thoughts and prayers, it is way past time to do something. Oh, that’s right, now is not the time to talk about t. We will just wait until the legislators are in the produce department and someone guns them down while they are squeezing the lettuce. Nobody wants to take away a rifle or a gun, just get the assault weapons out!

It’s unfortunate that the republican senators are so anti democrat that even in the face of disaster they would rather die than give in to common sense.

Gee, when Colin Kaepernick bent a knee like that, he was drummed out of the NFL. Maybe Varvel thinks bent knees are only allowed when someone other than police are doing the murdering.

Enough with the thoughts and prayers. Let’s do something. Being semi-conscious should not be the litmus test of who should be able to own a gun. As a gun owner and FORMER NRA member I understand the right for responsible ownership of firearms. That does not mean that it is the God given right for EVERYONE to have access to all manner of weapons.

    Right, Varvie?

fusilier, who points out that Ahmad Al Aliwi Alissa, and Robert Aaron Long, and Kyle Rittenhouse, and Nikolas Cruz, and Stephen Paddock, and Adam Lanza, and, et myriad cetera were all lawabiding. Until they weren’t.

Besides being the best country at mass murdering, we are also the best at offering prayers. Lot’s of useless gestures but no useful solutions.

    Wottsa big deal?

    Another mass shooting [shrug].

    .

Everybody knows it’s just a fact of life. Price of freedom and all that, right?

Nothing can be done about it, right?

    .

I mean, in an all-or-nothing mentality, ANY legislation to make it more difficult for mass shootings to take place is EXACTLY the same thing as total confiscation of all guns.

    That IS right, isn’t it?

Never mind that assault rifles are effectively banned and the republic survived and the result was NOT total confiscation of all guns. But banning assault style rifles absolutely WOULD result in the total confiscation of all guns, right?

    .

    Therefore, NOTHING can be done.

The Republican Standard Reply of “Thoughts and Prayers”. Judging from the less than effective impact, I’d have to guess the Thoughts are limited to “I think I better assure my voters that this won’t effect their ability to buy military-type weapons” while the Prayers are “I pray that never happens to ME”.

Thoughts and prayers have clearly failed to do a damn thing (good). So, let’s all just do it again, eh? Because that’s worked so well in the past.

If your legiscritters won’t actually do something about supporting the FIRST clause of the 2nd amendment, then for GOD SAKE VOTE THE BASTARDS OUT!

Varvel’s sentiment might actually mean something if he didn’t keep supporting the politicians whose policies allow all these violent murders to continue.

Prayers Gary? Really? What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if you say you have faith but do not have works? Can faith save you? If a brother or sister is naked and lacks daily food, and one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and eat your fill,” and yet you do not supply their bodily needs, what is the good of that? So faith by itself, if it has not works, is dead.

I seriously doubt that it matters much to the victims, or those they left behind what particular brand of nuts the gunmen were. I wish I could say that gun control would solve the problem, but we’ve seen how well controlling drugs is working now, or booze during prohibition. I’d say we need a better system of nut control. Problem with that is that we hold the principal that everyone has a right to do pretty much whatever they want above just about every other idea we might come up with. It isn’t enough to be crazy enough to be an obvious threat, you have to actually carry out that threat to get any attention.

Same response as to Lisa Benson’s schmaltzy strip today: Yeah, yeah, yeah – “thoughts and prayers”. But I can just imagine Lisa’s or Gary’s response if anybody suggested actually DOING anything about it. Keep your damn thoughts and prayers until you’re willing to actually make real change.
