It IS global  warming. What it’s NOT is warmer everywhere every moment of every day. In fact, the added temperature makes polar vortices more likely, and that’s what’s happened this week.

    Speaking of willfully ignorant clichés…

The five stages of AGW do-nothing:

    • Denial – Yeah, right! They screw up the forecast on a daily basis! The weather is always changing, so how could they possibly know?

    • Anger – Look here, these fancy talking weathermen are lying through their teeth! I’ll be damned if I let them screw up my life and cost me money just so they can get rich & famous!

    • Bargaining – Alright already. If you all are gonna make such a big deal about it, maybe we could make some plans about cutting back on stuff in the future— as long as you don’t bug me about it now.

    • Depression – Oh god! What’s the point in trying? This thing is too much to deal with and we’re all gonna die and there’s no way out.

This is typical Republican crap. Ordinarily, I would ignore this cartoon and move on but I am feeling cranky today and am in no mood for this type of BS. Local weather does not disprove climate change. A strange and temporary weather pattern does not disprove climate change. You are welcome to argue that it is too expensive to deal with climate change or that it is impossible. You would still be wrong but at least you are not basing your argument on a complete and total lie.

Climate change, not global warming. You know better.

Conservative is one thing, deliberately ignorant is another. We know you’re an educated, intelligent type. You have NO excuse. This is a lie. And not even a good one. When you lie, hoping your audience is simply too ignorant to know better, that’s an evil, dastardly lie.

I’ve stopped being polite about climate change deniers. At this point anyone who denies that the climate is changing, anyone who denies that a large part of the change is because of human actions, anyone who denies that there are really really really serious consequences not just in the distant future, not just in the near future, but actually right now, is an idiot. This is not some abstract academic argument. This is happening, and people are suffering and are going to suffer a lot more because of climate change. The pandemic is nothing compared to what climate change is bringing.

Climate is what you expect. Weather is what you get. Change climate, and the weather will change, but not necessarily the way one might expect. There will always be hot and cold weather until the planet is uninhabitable. Radical changes may make the planet uninhabitable. If we behave intelligently, we may keep the planet inhabitable a bit longer, as long as the means aren’t ‘socialist’.

I well remember then president Trump complaining with DC having cold weather that he wondered where this global warming thing was. Well, the globe is warming year by year. But, that doesn’t mean that we’ll experience warmer weather all the time. What a warmer mean temperature means is that the weather patterns will be thrown out of kilter from their expected norms. I’d hate to be in charge of long range weather forecasting these days as it’s practically a crap shoot. All over the globe, weather patterns are in disruption. Areas that can’t remember a snowfall are getting them. Greenland may actually live up to its name as their growing season keeps getting longer. The hurricanes in the US are stronger and more long lasting adding to the damage caused by flooding. Glaciers are becoming a thing of the past. And we will still have colder than normal winters as well as warmer and dryer sections making seasonal fires more pronounced.

To show how “stories” develop.. The TV announcers are blaming frozen gas lines for the power outages. Natural gas “freezes” at -297 F. I doubt it’s that cold in Texas.

Frozen instrumentation, lower gas pressures absolutely but the gas.. NOT FROZEN.

As a retired scientist and teacher for many years I can say that climate change happens every three months. I ask why did Obama buy a multimillion dollar mansion on the ocean if sea levels are rising. And please don’t believe anything Bill Nye ‘the science guy’ says, he is not a scientist- he is an engineer.

The issue is that ERCOT never imagined we’d have a blizzard this bad, and so they weren’t maintaining the equipment needed to keep the wind turbines and natural gas facilities working.

Governor Abbot is furious over the matter, and there are likely going to be consequences.

Supposedly otherwise intelligent humans who latch on to one weather event as proof of their idiotic views. Makes me sick! Go away and read up a little on the facts. “The current conditions in Texas are historical, certainly generational,” said Judah Cohen, the director of seasonal forecasting at Atmospheric and Environmental Research. “But this can’t be hand-waved away as if it’s entirely natural. This is happening not in spite of climate change, it’s in part due to climate change.”

Folks, it is Global Warming. It is not just the upper atmosphere, as someone here asserted. The oceans are warming. Nearly half of the rise in ocean level is due to expansion of water from being warmed. All during the time when morons were declaring a “pause” in global warming, the oceans were measurably warming. Water is the model for the thermal reservoir so beloved of thermodynamics lectures.

And contrary to Alberta Oils usual deflection, the Arctic Ocean is warming because there is less surface ice, which permits deeper penetration of light, and a decrease in the overall albedo. The oceans, seen from space, are dark compared to ice, so they absorb more heat. And waters flowing into the Arctic ocean from rivers have warmed.

Another property from thermodynamics — good absorbers are good radiators. The snow and ice also act as insulators on land. No insulation, more radiative cooling. So those warmer Arctic waters will, in the long dark Arctic winters, be radiating heat up into the Arctic atmosphere, something which did not happen so well when there was snow (on land) and ice (on the sea and land). If this does not spell climate change to you, you need to spend some time on 7th grade science.

While cold spells like that in Texas have happened before, just as prolonged hot spells have happened, the warming of the global atmosphere and global waters means that events in the tails of the distributions of energy happen more often, while the mean distribution shifts to warmer events.

And funny, thing, they have working wind turbines in places like Scotland and Germany. Maybe because they understand that Winter Happens and that you need to be prepared? And natural gas is a big export from Russia to Europe. Probably not too many frozen pumps along the way there because Winter Happens and you need to be prepared. (See 1812 and 1941, for example).
