For those who don’t know, Bill Mauldin was an editorial cartoonist who served in WWII. He won a Pulitzer for his body of work during the war, mostly cartoons about Willie and Joe, a pair of infantry soldiers in the field. He won a second Pulitzer in 1958, and drew a very famous cartoon of Lincoln seated in his Memorial, with his head in his hands, following JFK’s assassination.

Snoopy went to visit him 17 times on Veteran’s Day, between 1969 and 1998. He died in 2003 at the age of 81, three years after Schulz did.

On November 11th, 1918, at 11:00am, ALL the guns stopped firing in World War I. That day still lives on to today as Veterans/Remembrance Day.

Schulz was once asked what his most precious possession was. He showed the young child that asked his Combat Infantry Badge. Knowing a lot of vets who earned one, I can totally understand that.

    In Flanders FieldsBY JOHN MCCRAE

In Flanders fields the poppies blowBetween the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, flyScarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days agoWe lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie, In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who dieWe shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields.-——-My grandfather, gassed while serving with the USMC in WW1, would recite that poem to me as a bedtime story when I was little. Freedom, indeed, is not free.

Bill Mauldin was a contemporary of Shultz who did a lot of military themed editorial cartoons. If you look them up you will recognize some.

Earlier this year, I acquired my first original Mauldin (of Willy and Joe). It’s framed right next to my first Schulz.

Armistice Day has ALWAYS been Nov 11th. Remembrance SUNday is the nearest Sunday to Nov. 11th. (Second Sunday in November). There is NO Remembrance Day. Veterans Day is whatever you Yanks want it to be.
