The trick is to only do the things that you need to do, and do them in a way that keeps your risk as low as feasible. You really do need to vote, absolutely; but you should also do it in a way that keeps your risk as low as feasible: By NOT standing in long lines, sharing voting machines and the air they’re in… particularly when an absentee ballot is both feasible and safe.
There are a lot of other reasons for voting by mail. Just ask Trump for his. The truth is, removing polling places (since it’s hard to find poll workers in the pandemic) makes it harder to access voting, so vote by mail should be an option. Moreover, why shouldn’t there be vote by mail ALL the time? It’s a lot more secure than those electronic voting machines (with no paper back-up. Remember those?). It’s a person’s choice! And after all, you don’t have to go shopping in person, do you? You can have it delivered — I’ve done it.
As usual, Mr. Varvel misses the point. It is not just that I don’t want to go in public to vote. I live in New York State where we have Covid pretty well under control. The biggest issue is getting enough poll workers to run the election. It is very often the elderly who work the polling stations and they are at the highest risk with Covid and very well might not want to work this time around. When there is potentially a large problem looming you plan for it. Thus the need to allow mail in voting.
Most grocery stores in the St Louis area have an early hour when only old folks or handicapped are allowed to shop. I really like the idea that no one has been breathing on the food I buy for several hours, but I still wear a mask, glasses and gloves. My son says I’m paranoid. My answer is that if everyone had enough to sense to be paranoid, this would have all been history in February.
5 minutes at the checkout (non-scientific observations) at Kroger, Aldi, Target, Meijer, the local Asian groceries, (I refuse to patronize WalMart) versus two or three hours in line at the polls.
Oh, and what OldCoal said about curbside pickup – heck, even one of the Aldi locations offers it!
Mr. Varvel forgets that we have written laws allowing alternative options for voting.
His logic here further ignores medical expert advice to limit exposure to other people INDOORS when one can; it is in fact reasonable for some people to shop in person (maybe they have no practical alternatives such as a delivery app) and CHOOSE to vote by mail to avoid even more indoor exposure than say the once a week shopping trip.
I believe that this choice people have between voting by mail or in person, in addition to not having to be tied to other behaviors as Mr. Varvel pathetically insists on here, can be captured more eloquently with the words “FREEDOM” and “LIBERTY”. There’s a statue in New York Harbor dedicated to such ideals, I recommend he google it…
I think Trump has been telling everyone they can vote by mail. It’s called absentee ballot. Even Democrats can do it . People have done it for a long time and it works pretty well unless your too stupid to contact your registrar of voters. If you can legally vote it’s easy.
This toon does point out that we complain about the dangers of voting at the polls during the pandemic, but regularly shop at stores. I went to two stores yesterday and will probably go to two more, today. And, I will vote at my regular polling place come November.
The biggest worry about voting by mail is that the PO won’t get them delivered in time to count. Some, like military people and the homebound, do need to mail in their ballots. For the majority that just want to avoid crowds at the polls, there should be a curbside drop-off at each polling spot to make the process quicker.
Stores can limit the number of shoppers at a time and spread them out. At a polling place people have to come when they can- like before or after work- and there can be large crowds at one time.
Gary Varvel, I dare you to take the challenge. Chances are that your father did fight in WWII. and you are a little too young for VietNam ( am 2 years older than you and Nam ended when I was in College) You are a Trump follower based on your cartoons. I put this challenge out on GoComics and on Facebook and just got crickets from the Trump Supporters. Give it a go and give it your best shot. Tell us how much he loves our country and freedoms and how voting by mail is not right
I would like to hear from one trump follower (preferably one who’s father fought in WWII or one who fought in Viet Nam) to explain how you can support the voter oppression with this post office scandal? What do you think your father would say, knowing that they are trying to take away absentee voting by slowing down the post office. Go ahead, take a stab at it and explain how he is keeping our freedoms. I just would like to know
Grocery stores are significantly less crowded than polling places, and even then, many people are now using curbside pickup. As John Oliver said: “People who go shopping are afraid, they just have to eat. At some point, hunger outweighs fear.” But it’s senseless to take additional unnecessary risks by voting in person. Universal mail-in voting is a much better, more comfortable system anyway.
A coworker told me the voting site for his district is at a senior citizen facility and there has been no mention about relocating it. Think about that. Asking hundreds of people to visit an establishment that primarily serves elderly people that fit the high risk category for the disease. If we can encourage those at high risk (elderly, pre-existing conditions, etc) to do curbside pickup or delivery service for their groceries then why can’t we ensure they have full access to vote by mail in a fully funded secure election system?

See how long a store selling groceries would last with the checkout lane blocks long. Vote suppression thanks to rethugicans closing polling stations.

Why does it matter lady? You’re not going to have any health insurance soon IF you vote Republican in person or by mail.

To the conserves such as Varvel, the elderly and those high risk people should stay home and not dare vote against them because they might die.

Since Republicans are suppressing votes, voters have to stand in line for a looong time. Mr. Varvel approves, of course.
