Of course PART of the problem is that “our” “leaders” are deliberately stirring up resistance. For reasons that totally escape me.
The other part is that even back i 1918, there was a LOT of pushback, fights, legal cases etc. about orders to wear masks to help protect us all from the Spanish Flu. Look it up: There have always been a lot of irrational assh★les.
Hard to believe, that after all this time, there are still those who do not understand that the mask does NOT protect the wearer, but those in close proximity from an asymptomatic, presymptomatic, or immune carrier of the disease. The mask serves only to dramatically shorten the distance that vapor particles carrying the virus from coughing or talking can spread.
During the Second World War, Americans were asked to make sacrifices in many ways. Rationing was not only one of those ways, but it was a way Americans contributed to the war effort.
When the United States declared war after the attack on Pearl Harbor, the United States government created a system of rationing, limiting the amount of certain goods that a person could purchase. Supplies such as gasoline, butter, sugar and canned milk were rationed because they needed to be diverted to the war effort. War also disrupted trade, limiting the availability of some goods. For example, the Japanese Imperial Army controlled the Dutch East Indies (today’s Indonesia) from March 1942 to September 1945, creating a shortage of rubber that affected American production.
I see stupidhead is spouting nonsense. Does a mask work to protect you? Somewhat.
Does the mask work to protect others? Yes. My wife started adding pieces of shop towel to put in the masks. (She has made us lots of masks, which we put through the wash after every significant use. With the mask and no "filter’ (shop towel). when she tries to blow out a candle, she makes it flicker. With the “filter” in place, the candle remains steady when she tries to blow it out (candle is about 3-4 inches from her mouth). I imagine something like a coffee filter works well, too.
Now, some air must escape, but it will do so around the edges, and with less speed is the case of blowing out the candle without a mask. But with social distancing, the masks greatly reduce risk of transmission of the virus.
But I encourage stupidheads to hang out together, maskless, and up close. We’ll be well rid of them.
Rights…. The right to be ignorant? Or the right to be dead? Not sure I will ever understand the folks that think their “rights” are more the issue than health and welfare. I do admit that I am at the point where I almost have more respect for the one that doesn’t wear one at all as opposed to the one that wears it under their nose. At least the total non wearer is fully honest about their choice.
Does a Chef have the civil right to not wash his hands before exiting the restroom?
Does a Surgeon have the civil right to perform surgery without sterilizing his hands or not wear a mask before operating on YOU?
Dose a cafeteria worker have the civil right to not wear gloves or a hairnet when preparing your meal?
All these are public health issues. I don’t like wearing a mask either, but if everybody wore one and practice social distancing this would be over in a few months. Instead, these people who exercise their civil right to be stupid are going to drag this out for years.it’s time they pull their heads out of their EGO and get with the program.
Friends, you have made Hawgowar’s uninformed tirade the featured comment. Wouldn’t it be better to point out his misinformation as Baslim did in the main thread rather than as a reply? Even Twitter and Facebook are removing incorrect information on the virus from their sites.
During WWI, my dad told me, they would peel the foil outer layer on gum wrappers and save balls of it for the war effort. Then there was the massive mobilization of women by the Red Cross rolling bandages etc. We’ve come a long way sadly…
Hawgowar’s comparison of wearing face masks to rationing during World War II is VERY appropriate. During WW I, people were asked to Voluntarily ration supplies to help feed people in Europe since so many farms there were devastated. Because WW II was even more expansive and there hadn’t been enough time to recover after the first war, the U.S. used forced rationing to be able to send more supplies for soldiers AND civilians in Europe. Just like the masks are for the protection of others, rationing was to provide food for others.
My mother fondly remembers a neighbor giving some stamps to my grandmother so she could get shoes for my aunt and uncle.
Four years can seem like an eternity sometimes. Congress had to declare war in WWII.We had old aircraft and old ships. The USS Arizona, for example, was built about 1914. Our Democratic President who brought us thru the Great Depression died in 1945 before the war ended. America built an unbelievable amount of aircraft and ships. People bought Liberty bonds, Victory bonds, etc. Few complained about rationing. People raised Victory Gardens in their yards. Contributed to scrap metal drives. It took four years to defeat the Axis. People weren’t able to know, for the most part, where their loves were. Letters to home were censored. Loose lips sank ships. The public was told they had nothing to fear but fear itself.
Now compare that to about the four years with our Republican President with less than three months to go to Election. Now we do have something to fear and the next three months has become an eternity, but it will arrive. The President says we’re WINNING and knows HE’S LOSING. What he does now is what I FEAR.

Fine. Don’t wear a mask, just don’t exhale or sneeze or you might be sued for endangerment.

Bullseye, Mr. Ariail!
It’s really crazy to stop and think how it doesn’t occur to so many people that we all have to make necessary sacrifices in times like these.
