I haven’t seen one of those things for years and years. Of course I live far from the deep south, over here on the left coast. But surely, if “they” are pulling down relics of the confederacy, these should be among the targets…
Some historians believe that the Black figure that became the lawn jockey actually predates the Civil War. They claim that it was the invention of George Washington and was meant to commemorate the role of a Black adolescent, his favorite groom, who died young. Who knows, really?
These two attorneys fear a Black person on ‘their’ street. Imagine a poor Black person being given either of them as ‘their’ court appointed Defense Attorney. That’s FEAR.
I remember the LA riots years ago when mobs were looting and burning stores and houses . a vast majority of the business being attacked were owned by Korean’s. The ones not attacked were protected by the Korean owners standing in front of their stores with guns.
I heard that those black iron jockeys were symbols of safe places for the underground railroad. Places where slaves could be safe on their way to freedom. Go fig.
There’s no reason “lawn jockeys” NEED to be black. There’s a story that William Shakespeare’s first theatre job when he came to London was as a “horse holder.” (Nothing about Shakespeare’s missing years is certain, but “horse holder” was a real gig.)
[sigh] My colleague lived a block away from house of the private street incident in the Central West End. He got carjacked in front of his own house. His home was broken into, wife assaulted. They moved.
Was it the legendary Oliphant who had a cartoon with the lawn jockey after Ronnie and Nancy moved into the White House? I think it was his cartoon. Always thought it hit the mark.

Love the teeny tiny toes. I remember seeing them when I lived in the South which was abt 40 years ago. Hopefully, times have changed…

Recall that cigar stores used to put a statue of an “Indian”, with some cigars in it’s right hand, in front of their stores, as advertisement.
