Opal has taken the optimistic path. She might be correct.

Are you enjoying painting them? If so, that’s enough. :)

It could mean it takes a second or even a third look to appreciate painting. Yeah, we’ll go with that. (-:

You will appreciate the talent more after a couple of glasses of subtle wine.

Similar to Mark Twain’s comment on Wagner: “His music is better than it sounds.”(My response: “No, it isn’t.”)

Have tried painting, didn’t appear I had any actual talent. But after that banana duct tape thing, I might try again in a different style.

Just stick a whoppingly high price tag on it, Opal. They’ll think you’re a subtle genius!

Opal’s assertion that her painting is better than it looks is reminiscent of a quote attributed to Bill Nye, a Philadelphia newspaper columnist, whose short review of Richard Wagner’s compositions was, “Wagner’s music, I have been informed, is really much better than it sounds.”

“My paintings are better than they look” as indication of “subtlety” in art puts me in mind of Jackson Pollack. I’m told by those who should know that they are “masterpieces.” But to me, they still look like old dropcloths from painting the garage.

An art instructor once said that paintings should not be an exact replica of the subject. If that’s what you want, take a picture.

Art class was not my forte. Even my art teacher said she couldn’t believe I could not draw the stuff she wanted us too. So I was allowed just to do pics of colors blended or clouds.

I’d be pleased if someone said my artistic talent was… subtle… because to the disinterested outside observer, it’s clearly not even that  good.
