    The proper pronunciation, the side of the pond this story is set, is “Merkin.” (From the way it sounds in some dialects: “Ahh’m a ’merkin.”) An unusual item of clothing nowadays, but in the time of the story it would have been vital to wear one for some of those practising one particular profession -
