Whew. What an audience. And she is naked under the blanket. I’d be extremely uncomfortable if I were Elly. And Lynn drew April so tiny it is easy to overlook her. She looks like a doll from Liz’s childhood. Makes me wonder if it was on purpose that Lynn made Carol a nurse…planned ahead of this birth? If not for Carol, she might be in trouble because Connie is not in a medical profession but a technician – she is just a radiologist who takes xrays and sends them to the doctors. She’d be the one talking on the phone trying to figure what to do while trying to tend to Elly and the nosy people outside in the hallway and little Liz. Having a nurse helped a lot and Connie was able to focus on other things.
In the second panel, you might think that John is talking about a hospital birth instead of a home birth. However, what you don’t know is that the guy with the beard in the first panel looks just like Dr. Murray Enkin, Lynn’s Johnston’s obstetrician. Whereas most mothers would have to ride in the ambulance to go to the hospital to get herself and her newborn examined, Elly has the good fortune that this particular ambulance just happened to bring the obstetrician to her.
She didn’t have a nightgown on after giving birth? I get it, they want her body to breath after an intense labor, but there’s a lot of people in her house.
I suspect she is still a little delirious, and not a little bit relieved, to have just performed the miracle of producing another human being. Welcome to the world April. It’s a wondrous and terrifying place, but you have family. You’re alright.
I remember when this thread ran originally YEARS ago! Nice to see it again. Would love to have an update as to what the ADULT kids are doing today and if all are well. Thanks for the years you have put into drawing and scripting this comic.
Over 10 people are here and only, like what? 2-3 of them are actual medical professionals and yet there’s privacy. Call it irony but, I guess it’s still kinda sweet

Of course, this strip is a rerun, but in today’s world, just think of the risk of virus and germs for the newborn and mother in a case like this!

Honestly, Elly couldn’t have picked a better crowd than everyone gathered at that moment! I love the ending.
