Maybe he’s the Wizard’s godfather. There was a story by the Brothers Grimm called “Godfather Death” about a man who chose Death to be his son’s godfather. The boy grew up to be a doctor who could cure many people who were close to death because of his friendly relationship with Death. The trouble came when he started to let his greed get in the way of this relationship.
