Can we get a stay of execution until, say, November of next year?

Exactly, Mr. Alcaraz! This is what is on the line. As Trump replaces yet another person loyal to the Constitution and appoints another sycophant, this time to head Intelligence, it is looking like we may not have until November of next year.

Why should they do it better than states: DNA evidence exonerating innocent men after 20 + years in jail, execution methods causing extreme pain, etc. The cost of putting a person to death also great exceeds keeping them incarcerated for life.

In February of 2018, Trump said that Democrats who did not clap at his first State of the Union address were “like death and un-American,” musing that they could be called “treasonous.”

In September of 2018, he used it to describe the New York Times for publishing an anonymous op-ed from a member of his Administration, arguing that it was “virtually” treason.

“Number one, the Times should never have done that, because really what they’ve done is virtually, you know, it’s treason, you could call it a lot of things,” he told Fox & Friends.

In April of 2019, Trump used it to describe Democrats for opposing his immigration and border proposals.

“I think what the Democrats are doing with the border is TREASONOUS,” he tweeted. “Their Open Border mindset is putting our Country at risk. Will not let this happen!”

In April of 2019, he used it to describe investigations into his 2016 campaign’s contacts with Russia and Democratic lawmakers’ response.

“You know, when the Democrats go behind the scenes and they go into a room backstage and they sit and they talk, they laugh because they know it’s all a big scam, a big hoax,” he told reporters. “And it’s called politics, but this is dirty politics and this is actually treason. This is a very bad thing that people have done.”

Voting Rant, part 1: The single biggest issue in the 2020 election is getting Trump, his cronies, his family, and his Republican minions in the Senate out of office. Republicans know that the majority of Americans are sick to death of them, and that many of them, especially Trump, would probably be in jail if they weren’t currently in office. McConnell and the Republican senate have no intention of leaving office or letting any other candidate run against their useful idiot. To stay in office and on the money train, Republicans are systematically muzzling the media, spreading lies, misinterpreting laws, breaking the law with impunity, purging voting rolls, intimidating voters, inviting foreign interference in our elections, gerrymandering, catering to violent far-right extremist groups, and packing the courts. BTW, when the Republicans finish packing the courts, the law will only apply to us “little people.” If you don’t want another 4 years of Trump in the White House with his Republican supporters in Congress and FOX News directing his actions, voice your disgust when the Democratic candidates to tear each other apart and participate in circular firing squads. Don’t tell yourself that “any functioning adult” can beat Trump so it doesn’t matter if or how you vote. While any functioning adult could do a better job than Trump, not any functioning adult could win an election against him. When you chose a candidate, whether or not that candidate can win against Trump is of paramount importance. There are no perfect candidates, but if a candidate chooses a running mate wisely and can come up with a coherent platform, the pair would be very electable. So what if a candidate said something stupid decades ago? We all have – I sure did. Part of the promise of America is that people can learn from mistakes and change their beliefs and a big reason that we don’t get better quality candidates for any office

Voting Rant part 2: is that decent people don’t want to be pilloried over youthful stupidities (mind you, I’m not saying we should overlook vicious or criminal behavior, youthful or otherwise). Don’t choose your candidate because of a single issue. If you vote solely to support having the first woman president, while making a statement you’re also giving your vote to Trump. If you vote only to have the first LGBTQ president, you’re giving your vote to Trump. If you vote any single-issue platform or if you abstain from voting because your favorite candidate wasn’t nominated by the DNC, you’re giving your vote to Trump. If you vote for an independent, sadly you’re probably giving your vote to Trump. Those who abstained rather than vote for Clinton as a “moral issue” are now watching children be taken from their parents, caged, starved, abused, sold, and killed at our southern border in our names. How is that moral outrage over Clinton working out for you? There are, I hate to tell you, a great many nominally liberal voters who talk a good fight about being OK with or wanting a woman president, a gay president, etc., but when they go into the voting booth, they look for some old white dude to vote for and lie about it to pollsters before, during, and after voting. Realistically, we need their votes to get rid of Trump and all he stands for. Whoever runs against Trump needs to win by a significant margin, so that the Electoral College can’t ignore the results. I’m sorry. It doesn’t make me happy to have to tell you about this miserable state of affairs, but we’re right on the hairy edge of becoming a democracy in name only. It isn’t right and it shouldn’t be this way, but if Trump is re-elected, you will NEVER have another opportunity to vote regarding your single issue. You will never again in your life have an opportunity to vote in support of gay rights, women’s rights, minority rights, immigration reform, health care, or social security.

Voting Rant part 3: There will never be a woman president, or anyone else but Donald Trump or some member of his family.People of color, do you think for one minute it won’t be open season on you if this ignorant bigot is re-elected? Register to vote (if you aren’t already) and then vote despite all efforts to deter you. Young people, if you aren’t registered to vote, do it now so you aren’t jammed up for time on election day. Do I feel weird telling people how to vote? You bet. But the 2020 election may well be your last chance to participate in a genuine free election. You’ve got to get off your righteous rear and vote, because Trump supporters certainly will vote. Think about how you’re voting, and vote like your country depends on it – because it does. And no one is going to save us but ourselves.

I always wonder, what is the PURPOSE of punishment by the state? Why do we incarcerate people? Why do we execute them?

Is it because we want the punishment to be a deterrent?

Is it because the punishment somehow rights the wrong?

Is it because we gain a sense of moral satisfaction after we’ve punished the wrong doer?

I honestly don’t think we know. We do it just because we’ve always done it. We’re messed up.

If Trump wants to bring back the death penalty, then he should personally inject the chemicals, pull the electrical switch or drop the trap door on the gallows however, I think he would actually enjoy the experience.

Conservatives see death row as a disincentive and as “deserved” but the facts are completely in contradiction to that:

There has been no statistical change in the number of murders (etc) when states have dropped the death penalty.

Almost all murders (etc) are crimes of passion. Not all, but most. Such things have almost no connection with intellect. Gang bangers are distinct from that, but they’ve already shown they don’t pay attention to laws or legal consequences.

Nearly a third of the inmates on the Federal death row are there because they killed another inmate or prison guard while in prison for other crimes.

Point being, some people are so dangerous to others that you can’t even lock them up.
